What are water ionizer prefilters, how do you use them, and why would you use a water ionizer prefilter?

In this video I explain and demonstrate the water ionizer prefilter. Water ionizer prefilters can be found on my Other Products page. Most people don’t realize that water ionizer prefilters can be benefitial to your health, and your water ionizer’s health. This demonstration shows you an up-close look at a single housing with a prefilter inside. Here’s the video:

Water ionizer prefilters are beneficial to health, because they can filter out specific toxins you are concerned about in your source water. One particular element in most US municipal source water is fluoride. You can learn about fluoride and its harmful health effects in my blog posts about fluoride. Many professional water experts recommend the H3 Triple Housing Filter Set for city water with fluoride.

Well water users can benefit from specific prefilters sometimes if their well has some toxic element in it. An example may be arsenic or lead. While your regular water ionizer filter gets most of the bad stuff out of your water, it may not get all. Most water ionizer filters don’t get all the arsenic out. Therefore, if you have arsenic in your source water in significant amounts, you can benefit your health by choosing a specific prefilter to plug into your water input line which will get the arsenic out. The easiest way I know to test your well water to find out if there are any toxic elements in it is to get my Comprehensive Well Water Test Kit for $25. and find out instantly how much of each toxin you have and how this compares with the maximum amount of that substance allowed by the EPA.

Another popular reason to use a prefilter with your water ionizer is if you live in an area that has either very hard or very soft water. With very hard water there are scale-block prefilters that can remove some of the hard water elements from your water prior to it entering and potentially damaging your water ionizer. [Please note there are two other products that can help with hard water, the Ionizer Armor, and the EOS Anti-Scaling Device.] With very soft water or RO (reverse osmosis) there are remineralizer cartridges [containing calcite, coral calcium and 70+ organic trace minerals] that can be placed in your prefilter housing.

One more reason some people use prefilters is to save the life of their water ionizer filter. You can get a very inexpensive carbon block prefilter, which will get a lot of the junk out of your water prior to even entering your water ionizer. This will put less wear and tear on your Biostone or other more expensive main water ionizer filter…and allow you to use it for up to 50% more than without using prefilter(s).

Most prefilters last a very long time, usually 1500 gallons or more, and cost very little. So, prefiltering is often not just a healthy choice, but also an economical choice.

Why & How Should You Get Your Well Water Tested Before Using a Water Ionizer?

Water Ionizers minimize the acidic elements in your drinking water while at the same time maximizing the alkaline elements. While most alkaline elements are good and healthy for you [i.e., calcium, magnesium], there are some elements [arsenic, lead, nitrates] which can be found in well water in significant quantities and you DO NOT WANT TO MAXIMIZE THESE in your drinking water…you want to prefilter them out. But, first you need to know what they are!

How do you know what’s in your well water?

It used to be that you had to send your water to a lab to test your water [which could cost upwards of $100. for the analysis...plus take lots of your time to arrange!] Now, with my new Comprehensive Well-Water Test Kit, you can buy this really cheap, $24.95, and do the test yourself at home.

This kit will test for iron, bacteria, lead, pesticides, nitrates, nitrites, chlorine, pH and hardness [nine of the most common and potentially hazardous contaminants found in drinking water. With this kit, you can compare your results with the EPA-recommended levels. Also, once you have completed your testing, you can email the results to me and one of our water analysts can evaluate it for you as it relates to using a water ionizer with your well water. They are trained to know exactly which prefilter(s) you will need, if any, to make sure your ionized water is the best, healthiest, and safest for you and your family to drink!

You should get to know your areas water contaminants and risks so you can guard against them.

Every year the water company sends me a water quality report. In this report I am given a lot of data about my water…you should be too. Maybe this report is something you filed away and didn’t think about in the past, but now that you’re more informed, you might just take a look at it some time. It’s informative, however it only reports the elements that are federally regulated [so it's not a complete listing...actually there are over 100 contaminants that aren't even regulated, so they wouldn't be in the report].

My St. Louis report tells me about these:

Inorganic contaminants: Barium, Fluoride, Nitrate+Nitrite, Lead, Copper;

Disinfectants [byproducts of the disinfectants used to treat the water]: Chloramine, Trihalomethanes, Haloacetic Acids;

Microbes: Coliform Bacteria, Total Organic Compounds, and Turbicity; and finally it tells me about

Radioactive Contaminants: Gross Alpha Particle Activity, and Total Uranium.

Well, in looking over my St. Louis area report, there’s some good news and some bad news for people living in St. Louis [without a water ionizer]. The good news is no radiation has been detected. The bad news is: there’s too much lead in the water, almost too many Nitrates & too much Barium in the water, and

In my book… any of this junk in the water is bad news!

I’m sure different localities will have differing concerns, therefore, I’d expect the water reports to reflect the risks in that location. The report points out a maximum level of contamination for each of the contaminants, and a range considered “safe”. These are all usually reported in mg/L [milligrams per liter]. Then the report tells the Average level of the targeted contaminants found in the water [after treatment].

You can go to this website to get information on the contaminants in your area’s water: http://www.ewg.org/tapwater/yourwater/ Or you could go to your city’s website and search for “water quality report” or “water report”. Ex. My search, “St. Louis Water Report”, gave me the report as the first item on pg. 1.

Once you get your report, you can see if there’s something in your water that you may need a prefilter for. I think the Arsenic, Lead and Fluoride prefilter looks like something I should get. Prefilters targeting certain contaminants do a much better job than a single filter can.

With all that having been said, though, I feel pretty safe with my St. Louis water. And it’s all because of my wonderful Melody water ionizer with its awesome Biostone  [soon to be Biostone Plus] filter.

If you have well water, you’ll have to do your own testing. Fortunately, I now have a really inexpensive Comprehensive Well-Water Test Kit  you can purchase for 24.95.
