I’ve been drinking ionized water for years and only just recently started using reverse-osmosis-remineralized-water as my source water. I had no subjective knowledge of reverse osmosis prior to about 6 months ago, so I am writing this blog post for others who are in that situation.

There are many reasons one might need to use reverse osmosis. But, there is a serious problem with Reverse osmosis, and that is: it takes too much out of the water, leaving it void of all the healthy minerals and leaving it acidic as a result. RO used to be considered unhealthy, “dead water”. However, now, with the use of the Water Remineralizer, RO water is a healthy source water to use with a water ionizer. With my reverse osmosis system, the RO water before being remineralized is about a pH of 4, and after remineralization it’s about a 9 pH. If you’re not happy with your municipal water, co-op or well water as a healthy enough source for your ionized water, reverse osmosis might be the very best option for you.

Reverse osmosis was originally developed to remove salt from seawater. Which prior to that time, only distillation would do this trick. So if you use a whole house sodium-based water softener, something like a reverse-osmosis-remineralizer-system would be needed for your drinking water.

To give you an idea of just how small of a particle an RO system will filter out, here’s a chart that might help you grasp it:

  • A 1 micron filter  will filter out particles up to 1millionth of a meter [or 1 thousandth of a millimeter] [or the width of a single strand of hair].
  • A .1 micron filter will filter particles 10 times smaller than 1 micron.
  • A .01 micron filter will filter particles 100 times smaller than 1 micron.
  • A reverse osmosis unit will filter particles from 1,000 times up to one million times smaller than 1 micron.

There is another problem with reverse osmosis: that is the time to filter using RO is very slow. Before I got my reverse-osmosis-remineralizer system I could get a gallon jug filled, no problem, for my husband to take to work with him, but now [with the RO system hooked in] the pressure drops too low after about 2 quarts. Then you have to wait for 20 minutes to fill up the rest of the gallon. So, you may not be able to get all the water you want, when you want it with RO.

I’m not really complaining [too much], because…

I LOVE MY NEW REVERSE-OSMOSIS-REMINERALIZER-SYSTEM!

But, for someone wanting ionized water on the run, just keep it in mind that using reverse osmosis as your source water will slow things down, and you may run out of water during heavy-use times.

I did a series of videos, trying to figure things out with my reverse osmosis system – so I could answer my customers’ questions and communicate more accurately about reverse osmosis systems in general. Those videos follow this short section giving brief answers to the main questions I think people need answered. This is a work-in-progress, so I’ll post what I have so far done and learned…but add to it later as I find out more answers to my own questions.

How Much Does an RO System Cut Your Water Flow to the Water Ionizer?

The RO System cuts the pressure to the water ionizer quite a bit, so it is capable of flowing through the water ionizer about 40% slower — almost in half [in my observation]. So, a glass of water takes about twice the time to fill using RO as it would using your regular municipal water.

How Much Water Does a 6-Gallon Reverse Osmosis Tank Hold?

It holds about 4 1/2 gallons of water. The rest is filled with air [pressurized], which is necessary for maintaining the water pressure.

Using a 6-Gallon Tank, How Much Ionized Water in One Pouring Can I Expect to be Able to Get?

After the initial 40 ounces or so of ionized water production, there is a severe lessening in the water pressure to where it slows down so much the water ionizer stops ionizing [or ionizes the water only intermittently].

How Can you Tell How Much Water is in a Full Tank?

Water weighs about 8.35 pounds per gallon. Knowing the weight of the empty tank [11 lbs.] and the weight of the full tank [46 lbs] you can mathematically figure out the amount of water in the “6 gallon” tank. [35/8.35 = 4.2 gallons]

Here I am Weighing the Full RO Tank

Here I am Talking a Little About the Way the RO and Remineralizer Work

Here I Am Showing You How Much RO Water Will Flow through the Water Ionizer Before the Flow Rate Gets Too Slow.

Here I Am Weighing the Tank to See How Many Gallons [Total] Were Run Through the Water Ionizer

The tank weighed 38.8 pounds after pouring close to 2 quarts of alkaline water from the water ionizer [as opposed to 45.8 pounds full]. So it lost 7 pounds, which is the equavalent of about a little more than 3/4 gallon. So…

How much water can you flow through a water ionizer before the pressure drops too much?

Ans.: About 3/4 gallon out of the 4.5 gallons in the tank.

That having been said, the tank will replenish that 3/4 gallon in a pretty short time. So, in about 20 minutes you should be able to get another 2 quarts of ionized water from your water ionizer.

As I stated earlier, I’m still learning. As I refine my skills and knowledge related to reverse osmosis systems I’ll share that knowledge here. I do have a feeling I could pressurize my tank better and that should help in getting more ionized water at a time.

Fluoride is considered harmful by many health professionals and helpful to others. Here are 50 reasons why we should be concerned about fluoridation of our drinking water. The fact that our drinking water is fluoridated means that we all should know more about fluoride. Fluorides are important industrial chemicals with a number of uses but the largest uses are for aluminum production, drinking-water fluoridation and the manufacture of fluoridated dental preparations. It’s interesting that the scientists claiming that fluoridation is beneficial are connected with the aluminum and other manufacturers (who have an abundance of surplus fluoride byproducts to get rid of for a price. Here’s an incredible video [the video is 28 min. long -- split into 3 parts]. Literally everyone in the USA should watch this! I’m so thankful to Christopher Bryson for his investigative reporting on this. Will his story get squashed and swept under the carpet? Probably.

Also, below is a dentist’s report about fluoride.

There are many more reports coming in about fluoride all over the internet. I’m personally concerned, because my mom had Alzheimer’s disease and whereas there’s probably a genetic link, it’s also as likely that there’s an environmental link to this terrible disease. I wonder what the graphs would show if someone did a correlation study showing the introduction of fluoridation to our drinking water and the increase per-capita of Alzheimer’s disease. There are now 5.3 million people who have this disease, and it’s the 6th leading cause of death!

Here’s another thing that I can relate to: as a former teacher and administrator in elementary school, I was continually astonished by the year-by-year increases in students being diagnosed with learning disabilities and ADHD. I always linked the rise in per-capita diagnoses to the drug companies who sell ritalin and other cocain-type drugs, but now I’m thinking that fluoride may be an additional link (not to understate the drug companies’ role in the increasing statistics).

This article is not intended to drive you away from drinking water! You need water for life! You also don’t need dead water (reverse osmosis water) and that kind of water is connected with many more illnesses than fluoridated water. [As a side-note: If you do use RO water, you should remineralize your water at the very least to prevent the negative health effects of drinking water void of all minerals. RO water can leach minerals right out of your cells if you don't remineralize it before drinking it!] You also definitely don’t need bottled water (because most bottled water is acidic). Also, bottled water is expensive and the bottles are not being recycled in many cases. The best solution for right now is to use alkaline ionized water and to prefilter it for fluoride removal.

Filters can be purchased which will remove 99% of the fluoride in the water here: click on arsenic, lead & fluoride filters. It seems logical to at least do something to reduce the amount of fluoride we consume (especially the non-organic kind of fluoride). It should be noted that water ionization eliminates 85% of the fluoride in the alkaline ionized drinking water. That’s great news. Usually the FDA tries to ensure the ranges of fluoride in the water supply is within healthy limits, but for my money I wouldn’t totally trust what they’re considering safe. Taking a good 85% of it out I think is a good idea. Water ionizers can be purchased at my Alkaline Water Ionizer Store.  I suggest at least get a water ionizer, then for greater protection against fluoride just hook up the fluoride prefilter into the line that feeds your water to the water ionizer and voila! You’re 99% protected!

The concept of fluoridation (adding fluoride to foods and water) has been with us for decades. Some clever scientists noticed that organic fluorine is required with calcium for healthy teeth and bones. Extrapolating this, the scientists decided that more fluorine may mean more healthy teeth, (although they couldn’t prove this) and suggested that water supplies be “enhanced” with ionic fluoride, which is not the same compound and has different health effects. Coincidentally, the scientists worked for large paper and aluminum manufacturers, whose industrial processes produce large amounts of fluoride! Ionic fluoride does not contribute to this process and instead causes the over stimulation of the parathyroid glands, resulting in abnormal bone growth, calcification of tendons and ligaments and interrupts the process which generates energy in cells. Wide variations in fluoride intake among children make estimating fluoride intake difficult and much controversy surrounding fluoridation and youth.

Today, cities all over the US purchase hundreds of thousands of gallons of fresh pollution concentrate from Florida – fluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6) – to fluoridate water.

Phosphate fertilizer suppliers have more than $10 billion invested in production and mining facilities in Florida. Phosphate fertilizer production accounts for $800 million in wages per year. Florida’s mines produce 30% of the world supply and 75% of the US supply of phosphate fertilizers. Much of the country’s supply of fluorosilicic acid for water fluoridation is also produced in Florida.

Phosphate fertilizer manufacturing and mining are not environment friendly operations. Fluorides and radionuclides are the primary toxic pollutants from the manufacture of phosphate fertilizer in Central Florida. People living near the fertilizer plants and mines, experience lung cancer and leukemia rates that are double the state average. Much of West Central Florida has become a toxic waste dump for phosphate fertilizer manufacturers. Federal and state pollution regulations have been modified to accommodate phosphate fertilizer production and use: These regulations have included using recovered pollution for water fluoridation.

Is there any harm from drinking and bathing in contaminated water?

Yes!!! On August 9, 2007 Fluoride Action Network signed by over 600 professionals calling for an end to fluoridation and a call to legislators in fluoridating countries to hold hearings to determine why, after the release of the landmark National Research Council report 2006, aggressive promotion of fluoridation continues. Now there are over 1,720 signers!

Here are some more compelling videos related to the Fluoride being put in our water, the cancer risks related to consuming Fluoride, and why Fluoride should not be put in our water.

Hopefully, in the near future the “powers that be” will quit putting fluoride in our drinking water! But, until then, I think it’s a good idea to filter out the fluoride and of course at the same time ionize your drinking water for the greatest health benefits.

Note: This is a re-post of an article written by me in April, 2009. I’m re-posting this because fluoride is still being dumped into our water and I want to keep this issue in the top blog-spot until it’s no longer a problem.
