Both the Athena Water ionizer and the Melody Water Ionizer are two of my favorite water ionizers for many reasons.  But in this post I’m going to focus only on testing and comparing these two great water ionizers. I have compared them both in the past, but it’s been a while since I’ve done any water ionizer comparison testing. In the meantime my testing skills have gotten better as well as my overall knowledge, so when I had the opportunity to test these two great water ionizers up against each other today I took it.

The Athena and Melody Water Ionizer Thoroughly Tested in Every Way

To thoroughly compare the Melody water ionizer with the Athena water ionizer, I’ve done two complete sets of testing at every level: lowest acid level, plus levels 1, 2, 3, and 4. To see all of the testing, watch the following three water ionizer comparison videos, below, then read the charts and analysis that follows.

How to Compare Water Ionizer Testing Results:

There are two ways you can look at water ionizer comparisons. You can either just look at the numbers, and reason out which is the better water or you can apply a scientific formula to it to actually compare the two ionizers more scientifically. First I’m going to show you just how to look at the numbers and compare them. I’ll coach you through this:

Look at Level 3 for Test 1, below. See how the pH is 11 for both ionizers? Also notice that the ORP is hugely more negative for the Athena. That means that per level of pH the Athena is producing more ORP.

If you do further investigation you’ll see that the Athena is the better water ionizer for Levels 3 and 4 [the levels people usually drink at], while the Melody is better for Level 1. Level 2 is a draw.

Scientifically Comparing Water Ionizers:

To scientifically compare water ionziers you need to understand the term, rH [relative Hydrogen], and how important it is to comparing water ionizers. So many people would look at numbers, like the Test 1, Level 1 results, above, and say that 10.2/-422 was better. When in fact, the 9.4/-383 is really a little better. You just can’t look at those particular numbers and figure it out easily. Therefore it’s helpful to have a formula to help you do that. RH is simply a measure of negatively charged Hydrogen per unit of pH in your water.  The smaller the number [closer to zero], the better [healthier & more anti-oxidizing] the water is.

The formula for rH is: rH = (ORP + 200) / 30 + 2 * pH

On a scale from 0 to 42, above 28 is oxidizing (higher potential to damage the closer it gets to 40) and below 28 is reducing (anti-oxidizing)…the lower [closer to zero] the better. RH is the best measure of the healthiness of that ionized water.

Both water ionizers give you healthy water and perform well. They are both very hydrating and anti-oxidizing. The Athena is better at levels 3 and 4, which are the levels people mostly drink at, so the Athena is worth the extra money [in my opinion].

Normal tap water is the reverse, it’s oxidizing [up around an rH of 32]. Any water below an rH of 28 is good water to drink, healthy, hydrating, and anti-oxidizing.  You can read more about the history of rH at this link: http://h-minus-ion.vpinf.com/rH-score-1.html

I have calculated the rH of all test results, above, and show them in the following chart. The smaller the number [closer to zero] the better.  Anything below an rH of 10 is a fantastic result. Actually anything under an rH of 20 is very good. Take a look at what happens with the Athena results right around Level 3. The rH makes a significant leap in value [almost double]. That’s why I like to drink my ionized water from the Athena at Level 3. At first I just intuitively liked the water best at that level, but after scientifically analyzing it I can see the rH score is so much better too.

Both ionizers perform well though. They are both very hydrating and anti-oxidizing. Normal tap water is oxidizing [up around an rH of 32]. Any water below an rH of 28 is good water to drink, healthy, hydrating, and anti-oxidizing [including mountain spring water].  You can read more about the history of rH at this link: http://h-minus-ion.vpinf.com/rH-score-1.html

Here are some interesting water ionizer comparisons that were all done about a year or so ago by Ronnie Ruiz. I’m re-posting this article, because it needed updating and in addition to that it contains important information for anyone considering to purchase a water ionizer. Ronnie states in his introduction to the video series that all of the water ionizers come out very similar in their numbers [i.e., pH & ORP] and I believe that’s true, too, with my own testing and with the testing I see here in Ronnie’s videos. I also agree with Ronnie that not all water ionizer companies are tried-and-true. So, just because a water ionizer gets good results in pH and ORP that shouldn’t be the only test of a good water ionizer. If you look at the bottom of this post you can find out more about the different water ionizer companies.

In the following three videos and chart you can see comparisons between the Melody, Chanson VS 70 and the Enagic water ionizers. These are all clearly good water ionizers — doing the job that water ionizers should do.

Though I’ve indicated a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the chart above, really these are all good water ionizer results. Keep in mind that the ionized water drinking levels are not being tested here. The rH [Relative Hydrogen: Indicator of drinking water quality] is almost too close to call. On a scale of 0 to 42, an rH closest to 0 is the best. In the case of this test series that puts the VS70 as having a better drinking quality of water than the Enagic, but really the Melody, Enagic and VS70 are all exceptional in their drinking water quality.

You can also see that the low-acid pH is very close between the Enagic and the VS70. The Melody’s low-acid is perfect for beauty water or watering plants, but I don’t know if it would kill germs. The Enagic and VS70 low-acid water would kill germs. The only thing with the Enagic, though, is that to get that low acid, you need to continually supply your ionizer with saline solution. That gets expensive, but then the Enagic is expensive, comparatively, anyway.

Ultimately, the stability of a water ionizer company can be seen in its certifications:

Which Water Ionizer Company has what Certificates? Here’s all the info! [This informatiion is gathered from the water ionizer US main distributors' websites and I have no personal knowledge other than what they claim]

  • KFDA: Korea Food & Drug Administration [GMP standards & authorization to manufacture and sell medical devises]: Jupiter, Ionquench, Tyent

What is the Best Water Ionizer News from 2009?

The Improved Water Ionizer Warranties!

As we get ready to end our year 2009 it’s time to celebrate some of the highlights. Looking back over the year, I think the best change for the water ionizer industry ever is the introduction of “Lifetime Warranties”. What that does is give you, the consumer, the confidence to know that if your water ionizer breaks down prematurely, due to some design flaw or something beyond your control, you are protected! That’s great security!

Here’s a breakdown of the water ionizer companies and their warranty improvements [or not] for the year 2009:

Jupiter Water Ionizers:

Started the year 2009 with 5-year warranties, but now have Lifetime Warrantees!

The Jupiter Company water ionizers: Athena Water Ionizer, The Delphi, The Melody Water Ionizer, The Orion Water Ionizers, and the Venus Water Ionizer … all now come with Lifetime Warrantees! These are sold by Ion Life [the Melody and Orion] and Ion Ways [the Athena and Delphi], two related companies. Here are the links to the exact warranty cards so you can see for yourselves!

http://alkalinewaterplus.info/blog/uploaded/IonWays_Warranty_AUG_09.pdf

http://alkalinewaterplus.info/blog/uploaded/WarrantyCardIonLife-aug09.pdf

Chanson Water Ionizers:

Started 2009 with 5-year warranties and now are covered by Lifetime Warranties. Here’s the link for that:

http://www.chansonalkalinewater.com/chanson_ionizer_warranty

Life Water ionizers

Life water ionizers started 2009 with 5-year warranties with an optional 10-year upgrade [and 20-year warranty on their plates], and are now also giving Lifetime Warranties [but only if you follow their reasonable guidelines for water ionizer care]

http://www.alkalinewaterplus.com/life-water-ionizers

Tyent water ionizers

Tyent water ionizers started off with 5-year warranties. Tyent’s plates are now warrantied for 20 years, and Tyent gives the customer an option to purchase extended 10-year warranties.

KYK water ionizers

KYK water ionizer warranties haven’t changed, and KYK water ionizers are still covered by 5-Year Warrantees [but their prices have come down].

Enagic Water Ionizers

Enagic warranties haven’t changed, and Enagic [Kangen Water] water ionizers are still covered by 5-year warranties.

In this day and age when all of the water ionizer companies are competing with each other for your business, the consumers benefit. And these new warranties are an example of that.

What are the conclusions? These are all three good water ionizers! I figured they’d all test out great. I already knew from watching Ronnie test the VS 70 that the Chanson acid water was going to test out so low. I’ve never seen the Miracle actually tested before, so this was nice to know that it gets such a great low-acid as well. A 3.0 acid level is fantastic in my eyes…and the other pH tester showed it down to about 2.7 on the VS70! At that low-acid level you could definitely kill germs. According to Nedalee the tests are in and the low-acid water from the Chanson water ionizers are killing staff and e-coli. The next test they’re going to do is for salmonella.

I was very happy for the experience of going to the Chanson water ionizer company! The Chanson company is new to the US, but they’ve been making water ionizers for a long time in Taiwan. They are state-of-the-art water ionizers and the compact size is quite an advantage if space is an issue for you. These tiny water ionizers have 7 plates in them and the power gets up to 150w [which is as high as it needs to get.]

I recorded these videos a week ago when I was getting ready to bring my Melody water ionizer to California with me [to give to one of my sons]. This series is a tribute to this fantastic water ionizer , the Jupiter Melody Water Ionizer, which my family and I have been enjoying for about the past year. I’ve decided to do one last series of comparison tests, because it may be a while before I get to test the Melody against the KYK, Athena and Tyent again. In this series, I’ve tested Level 3 and Level 4 of the Melody vs. Tyent water ionizers; the Melody vs. KYK water ionizers; and the Melody vs. Athena water ionizers. What’s amazing is how well the Melody has done in comparison with these other great water ionizers. The Melody @1495.00 is less expensive than the other three water ionizers AND has a lifetime warranty. It’s also made by one of the oldest & most trusted names in water ionizers…Jupiter! Also, no matter which is your personal choice of water ionizer …for a limited time, if you mention this blog post, I’ll give you $100.00 off your purchase price for a brand new Water Ionizer! Wow! What a bargain! Here are the videos:

It is rare that you will ever see the Enagic water ionizer in a comparison water ionizer test. Most Enagic dealers are reluctant to even want to see comparison testing. So I feel priveledged to bring these videos to you.

We tested and compared the Enagic SD 501, the Melody, the Athena, the Tyent Turbo, & the KYK Genesis 7-Plate water ionizers!

Throughout this testing there was an overall trend toward the…

Enagic not having the best quality of drinking water, but having a better ability to get the highest/lowest pH for non-drinking water [used for cleaning].

*See below for a good explanation of how the best quality of drinking water  for water ionizers is determined.

I couldn’t test them all at once, so I split the testing up into two groups of three water ionizers. Each group was focused on testing two water ionizers against the Enagic [since I don't often get a chance to test the Enagic, I wanted to make sure all four of my water ionizers had a chance to be tested with the Enagic].

Group 1: The Enagic water ionizer, the Tyent Turbo water ionizer and the KYK water ionizer.
Group 2: The Enagic water ionizer, the Athena water ionizer, and the Melody water ionizer.

I’ve highlighted in red the winning water ionizer score from each group of tests. Please note: You can’t very well compare a water ionizer from group 1 to group 2, unfortunately, because of too many variables, but if you look at the Enagic as the focal point you can get an idea of how they compare.

This is a good example of how tricky this testing is!

Note: These water ionizer comparison tests were conducted in St. Peters, MO, which has a tap water which is 8.46 pH and +195 ORP
*The rH of a solution is based on a formula applied to the pH and ORP to arrive at the relation between the level of ORP to the level of pH. It is the best measure of the healthiness of that ionized water. I always consider the rH to be the most important measure to look at in any water ionizer comparison test.

  • Here’s an example: if you have two water ionizers producing water at a pH of 9.5, and one has an ORP of -300 and the other has an ORP of -400, then the one with -400 is producing water at a healthier overall quality. Most people testing water ionizers don’t get the exact same pH readings for all the water ionizers tested. So the rH formula is necessary to really see which water ionizer is producing the healthier water. The formula is a very simple one, and anyone comparing water ionizers should look at the rH of the water at the drinking water levels if they are trying to figure out which water ionizer is best. Because ORP is a very tricky measure to get and ORP meters can vary from test to test [depending on how well or frequently they're cleaned, source water and other factors] it’s important to only compare the ORP or rH of water ionizers tested in one setting by the same tester. RH is measured on a scale of 0 to 42, with 0 being the healthiest and 42 the unhealthiest. Tap water in St. Louis is usually around 30 – 35 rH. Any water under 28 rH is considered “reducing” and so is healthy for you.

In the following videos and chart I am comparing the Athena and Melody water ionizers. These water ionizers are both Jupiter water ionizers.

Jupiter is a well-known brand name for medical-grade water ionizers that you can trust for their quality and dependability.

The Jupiter Athena water ionizer is the high-end Jupiter model which has DARC cleaning [best internal self-cleaning of all of the water ionizers], mesh plates and dual filtration, and sells for $2095.00 verses the Melody water ionizer [the moderately priced Jupiter water ionizer, which cleans itself great, is electro-plated [solid plates which are platinum-coated with peaks and groves for greater surface area for better electrolysis], and sells for $1395.00]. The Melody often comes very close in water ionizer  comparison tests, so I think it’s a great choice for anyone on a budget. The Lifetime Warranty makes either of these water ionizers an even sweeter deal!

Here’s my analysis: It looks like the Athena beats the Melody in every level for rH [water drinking healthiness per level of pH], but the Melody is testing very good.  They are both producing very healthy water! I don’t think you could go wrong with purchacing either of these water ionizers.

The healthiness of the water is measured a few ways. I’ll explain:

The aging body tends to become more and more acidic as life goes on [especially if we eat junk food or have an acidic diet over a period of years]. For this reason, we need water which is alkaline, so we can replenish our buffers to ward against the tendancy toward acidity. Otherwise our cells have no way of getting rid of their toxins. So pH is a factor in the healthiness of water.

  • Water ionizers produce a high alkaline pH. Even the water ionizer I purchased 17 years ago produced a nice high pH. Of course you don’t need the extremely high pH [that some water ionizers produce] for drinking purposes. Drinking water at a moderately high pH can help alkalize your body and get rid of the acidic wastes that have built up in your cells.
  • Oxidation is also a factor in the health of one’s body. Like a cut apple that turns brown, our cells tend to become over oxidized. I don’t know if the cells turn brown or not, but damage of one kind or another [commonly referred to as free-radical damage] happens when the cells are oxidized. To combat the body’s tendancy toward free-radical damage, theoretically, one would consume antioxidants. A way to test the antioxidant quality of a liquid is to measure its ORP [Oxidation Reduction Potential]. The more negative the ORP, the better. Any ORP with a greater negativity than -300 is considered “medical grade” ORP.
    • My personal experience with drinking water that has a high negative ORP [between -300 and -600] is that things like wrinkles and spider veins reduce when you drink water that has a higher negative ORP. I’m sure that the ORP is good for other things as well; basically anything that you would take antioxidants for would benefit from the consumption of water with a high negative ORP.
  • The rH [relative Hydrogen] of a solution is based on a formula applied to the pH and ORP to arrive at the relation between the level of ORP to the level of pH.
Will the Melody and Tyent 7070 Water Ionizers Overheat after 10 Continuous Minutes of Producing Ionized Water?

I heard yesterday that some Enagic dealers were claiming that the Enagic LeveLuk SD 501 water ionizer was the only water ionizer that could pour ionized water continuously for over 10 minutes, non-stop. So this morning I tested this theory on the Melody and Tyent 7070 water ionizers [which I happened to have both right now hooked up to my sink [for other testing].

I had the two water ionizers flowing water for about 2 minutes prior to starting the video [while I was regulating their flow rates. Then I poured some samples of ionized water from each water ionizer to test...all before starting the video. So just add two minutes to the time of how long these water ionizers were continuously pouring water. Where I had to split the videos [in order to comply with You Tube's maximum video length guidelines] I overlapped the videos, so you can re-watch part of the video before the split on the part 2 video [so you see it was continuous.] The point is I’m trying to show some proof…so you don’t have to rely on trust entirely.

Here are the videos:

The results are:

  • The Melody and Tyent 7070 water ionizers were neck & neck in the pH/ORP/rH testing of the ionized water produced throughout the 12+ minutes of pouring;
  • The Tyent 7070 water ionizer slightly beat the Melody in rH for all testing done throughout. This means the Tyent’s pH was slightly less than the Melody while at the same time the Tyent’s ORP was slightly more negative than the Melody…producing a better rH. However the results were slightly different…and so I’d say they were almost the same [in the healthiness of the water].
  • The Melody continued to flow ionized water non-stop until I turned the water flow off. There was no slow-down, stop, drop in pH/ORP, overheating, or any indication of any problems at all.
  • The Tyent stopped itself and had a flashing light on the screen, however in the Tyent manual they did not state that this was for anything but to prevent accidental leaving your water ionizer on [let's say you leave it pouring and forget all about it] the water ionizer will turn itself off after about 10 min. of use. I could see no signs of overheating…it just stopped itself. When a min. later I turned it back on…it continued to give predictable ionized water at the levels it was producing earlier.

The bottom line is: this is another Enagic “story” [or I should say "lie"] that has been debunked. I don’t encourage you to all go pouring ionized water on and on, non-stop, for minutes and minutes. Why would you? But, the experiment showed it was possible to do none-the-less Hope this helps!
