I had a phone call the other day asking about a filter that gets potassium out of water.  I wanted to explain in detail here why you should filter this out if you have a water ionizer, and the best way to do so.

Salt and Potassium based Water Softeners

The two most popular water softeners that are used today use either salt or potassium to exchange with the “hard” mineral, calcium.

Salt and potassium should not be constantly run through a water ionizer as these are both conductive minerals.  It will wear on the plates and cause the ionizer to not be as effective.

If your water has excess salt or potassium in it, you need to filter it out (if you want to protect your water ionizer from excess wear and tear).

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis is the best way to filter out salt or potassium.  Both salt and potassium dissolve very thoroughly in water. This is why you must use Reverse Osmosis to get it out.

If you think about it, sea water has salt in it.  If it was easy to get salt out of water, we wouldn’t have a water conservation problem on our planet.

RO [reverse osmosis] will filter out most other toxins as well!  The only thing to keep in mind when using reverse osmosis with a water ionizer is that you must then remineralize the water.  In order for electrolysis to work, you must have minerals in the water.

Another option you would have if you didn’t want to get an RO [reverse osmosis unit] would be to install a direct water line to hook the water ionizer up to.  In this event, you would want to protect against hard water as the problem with excess calcium in water is that it will tend to scale the insides of the water ionizer. We do have devices to reduce/control scale, so give us a call if you’re interested in that.

Ionizer Set-Up

The good thing is that once you have your ionizer set up properly, you won’t need to do much to keep it working at it’s best!

After over 16 years of drinking alkaline ionized water, I can say with conviction that the very best thing I could give to myself or a loved one is a WATER IONIZER! Give yourself and your family the gift of health this year!

Whenever I’ve compared the Venus Water Ionizer with the Melody, KYK, Tyent, etc. it has always tested a bit lower than those other water ionizers in most areas. It is less expensive than the other Jupiter water ionizers, and so one would expect it to test a little lower. It is a pretty good water ionizer though. That’s why today I’m going to take a minute to tell you about the Venus water ionizer and show you some testing videos I’ve done.

A little story behind this testing is that a friend of mine in Phoenix bought this water ionizer but couldn’t get the acid water to go below about a 5 pH and the ionized water was a bit cloudy. He was convinced the water ionizer was no good because of this. However, in Phoenix the water is very hard plus it has a high TDS [total dissolved solids]. The combination of the extremely hard water and high TDS was just too much for the Venus and it wasn’t getting good ionization under those circumstances. However here in St. Louis the Venus water ionizer is testing great [as you can see by the videos and charted results below]. The quality of the source water makes a big difference in a water ionizer’s performance. My friend lives in an apartment and with limitations on what he can do and he isn’t in a position to be able to install a scale-block prefilter or reverse osmosis. So he exchanged the Venus for an Orion water ionizer. The Orion is able to get better ionization than the Venus in Phoenix water, so he has decided to keep the Orion. It’s not perfect, though, and the only way to really fix a problem like that so the ionizer works perfectly is to use prefilters and anti-scaling devices or a reverse-osmosis-remineralizer. Unfortunately with differing water qualities around the country some people have to do more and spend more to get their water quality straightened out.

The Jupiter Venus water ionizer isn’t as strong of an ionizer as many of the other water ionizers I sell. It doesn’t get as good ORP per unit of pH as the Melody [....which doesn't get as good as the Orion, Athena, Aquarius, or Delphi water ionizers], but in its own right it is a very good water ionizer and is worth mentioning. Here is the chart, showing the results of the above videos, and the results are not bad at all.

I would say if you can afford to get a better water ionizer I suggest you get a water ionizer in the “best” category [better ORP per unit of pH..such as the Orion, Athena, Aquarius, Tyent and Miracle water ionizers], but in my mind there is a “near best” category [Melody, IonQuench] and a “very good” category [Venus and Eden] which are worthy of consideration especially for young and healthy families on a tight budget who don’t live in areas with very hard water. For my family and me during our first 15 years of drinking ionized water we knew only one ionizer, the old Ange water ionizer, which would test lower in comparison with any of the water ionizers we sell on my site today, and we were just as happy as we could be with it.

It is becoming more and more popular for well-water users to hook up to a…

WATER IONIZER!

I’ve been amazed to find out how many people all over the US, in every state, are well-water users! There’s an astounding number! I’ve also learned over the years that though wells can give you great water, there can also be some serious problems with well-water too. There’s not just one kind of well, so I’ll try to address all of the things that I’ve come across, in hopes to be able to assure all well-water users that no matter what the problem with your water [if any], we can fix it. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t use a water ionizer with well water. What they are probably referring to is that you shouldn’t use a water ionizer with well water if you don’t know what’s in your well water. And once you know what’s in it, you can fix whatever it is [if there is a problem] and not only can, but should, use a water ionizer with it. A water ionizer will give you lots of extra filtration and protection as long as you pre-filter it correctly.

Giving yourself an excellent and healthy source of ionized drinking water:

Do not just hook a water ionizer into your plumbing [if you're a well-water user] without doing comprehensive testing! 

Municipalities, water companies and co-ops test water frequently, and they must report at least once per year the results of those tests. If you belong to a co-op or municipality, you can get a copy of their “water quality report” either online or by calling them. Look on your water bill for the number.

If you own a well, you are probably the only one that tests your well water. And so, you’re responsible to your own health and your family’s to test at least a suggested amount of once per year. Some municipalities will test your water for you if you bring a sample in. However many don’t. The easiest way I know to test your well water if you don’t have someone to do it free for you is to use my Comprehensive Well Water Test Kit .  It’s very cheap and easy to do. It’s pretty comprehensive, and is designed for well-water in particular. With this test kit, you can find out instantly how much of each common well-water toxin you have and how this compares with the EPA guidelines. Then you send the test to me: support@alkaline-water-plus.info and request a free engineer’s analysis.

What happens, if you have something in your water that could be unhealthy, is that my water engineers will recommend the exact prefilters you need to fix the problem. Examples of common well-water toxins or problem elements are:  arsenic and lead, sulphur and iron, lime and excessive hardness,  bacteria, nitrates, and heavy metals. While your regular water ionizer filter gets most of the bad stuff out of your water, it may not get all.

Water ionizers will cause a greater concentration of certain elements in your ionized drinking water  [if they're alkaline], and those elements [if they're harmful] are the ones you want to focus on for prefiltration.

Bacteria:

The cheapest way to handle bacteria in your well water is to disinfect it with chlorine. I know — yuck! But, of all the elements, chlorine is the easiest to filter out of your water. The cheapest carbon block [charcoal] filter will filter out the chlorine. Chlorine is unstable, bonds with the carbon in the filter, and thus gets removed from the water. Personally, if it were me, I’d use the chlorine, kill the bacteria, and then hook up a cheap carbon block whole-house filter to get rid of chlorine and sediment prior to going into the house. It will get the chlorine out of all of your water. This would be healthier for bath and shower use. When the water is heated, the chlorine turns into gas and you breathe it in. This kind of inexpensive prefiltering also saves the life of your more expensive water ionizer filter. It is smart to get your sediment out if you have a lot of it. Why have a more expensive filter get all gunked up with sediment when an inexpensive carbon block prefilter can do the job!  Word of caution: Do not disinfect your well-water with chloramine [a mixture of chlorine plus amonia]! Once the chlorine has bonded to the amonia, it becomes very stable, and thus greatly reducing any filter’s effectiveness in getting rid of it. Also, don’t use other disinfectants which may not filter out well. Just use chlorine.

If you just can’t stomach putting chlorine into your well water you will need to do something about bacteria and viruses that could get into your well water. I suggest to purchase a UV [ultraviolet} light and use a Bacteria Prefilter. The bacteria prefilter is actually pretty cheap, but the UV light can be pricey. You can get a small UV filter to just use with your drinking water that is pretty inexpensive. They both need about yearly replacement parts. I would personally not use either a bacteria prefilter or UV light all by itself. The .02M or .01 filter is designed to catch the bacteria, because the pores of the prefilter are so small that bacteria are not supposed to be able to get through. But I'd wonder about this. The Jupiter water ionizers have a .01M filter, and the Jupiter engineers still say that the water should be treated before putting it through the ionizer.

Hydrogen Sulfides:

This is a poisonous sulfer toxin that can enter a well system unpredictably. You may have no sign of it one day and after a heavy rain all of a sudden have it in your well water! The sign for this is a smell of "rotten eggs". The only way right at this time to get rid of this is a special sulphur prefilter, which is inexpensive, but needs to be replaced about yearly. 

Iron: This is a metal that in large amounts can harm your water ionizer. It's probably not great for you either in its inorganic form. The signs for it is a yellow color to your water. It's caused by old cast-iron pipes or other iron things rusting and leaching into your water. Usually you find this situation in older communities or buildings with older plumbing systems that haven't been renovated, but you can find it in wells. You can get an Iron Prefilter for fairly cheaply and the iron and sulphur are filtered out with the same prefilter.

Sand and Sediment: Your ionizer filters will filter out sand and sediment, but these things can clog up your water ionizer filter and cause it to become less effective prematurely. If your source water has a lot of sand or sediment in it, you are wise to get a sediment or carbon block prefilter.  Or there is a small device, called a sand catcher, that you can put into your water line. This has to be emptied constantly though, so that's a hassle.

Lead: This is found in older homes and communities and is a source of "lead poisoning" so needs to be handled for health reasons, but it can be found in wells too. Lead could harm you of course, but it can also harm your water ionizer by interfering with the electrolysis [due to the fact that it's a magnetic metal]. If you have lead in your source water, you should use the Fluoride/Lead/Arsenic prefilter, which is inexpensive.

Heavy Metals: If you have radium in your water or other heavy metals, you can purchase a Heavy Metal prefilter for a fairly inexpensive price.

Is Your Water too Hard? If you don’t want to filter out the calcium in your source water, but it’s a little too hard and is potentially damaging your water ionizer [or reducing the pH/ORP] due to scaling, then the best thing you can use is an Elimination of Scaling Device. Second to that I suggest the Ionizer Armor.  Sometimes water can be so hard that you need a whole house softener. I advise you not to get the sodium or potasium based softeners. These make the water unhealthy for you to drink and you can’t use source-water that has an excess of sodium or potasium with your water ionizer. Both sodium and potasium are electrical conductors, and an excess of these would interfere with the electronics of ionization. This could cause your water ionizer to break down prematurely. They are also not good for the environment either. Too much sodium and potasium dumped into sewer pipes finds its way to rivers and streams and overloads them with sodium and potasium…upsetting the balance of nature. Fresh-water fish do not want salt!

• If you need to soften the water in your whole house, the best thing you can do for your health, the water ionizer, and the environment is to get an all-natural whole house softener that doesn’t use sodium or potasium, such as the Water Dove Whole House Softener.
• If you don’t use a whole-house softener [but have excessively hard water or excessive TDS] I suggest the Chanson Nano-Filtration System or Reverse Osmosis [see below].
• If you do use a whole-house sodium-based or potasium-based water softener, I suggest the Chanson Nano-Filtration System or Reverse Osmosis [see below].

Too many prefilters needed? I offer three “comprehensive filtering systems” for well-water users. These are the most effective filtering methods for well-water users, because they offer complete filtration of everything listed above. These systems are described in the next section. The first two, Reverse osmosis and nano-filtration, are the systems I suggest for people who have excessive water hardness, excessive TDS, and/or are using a whole-house sodium-based water softener. If you are a well-water user and your water is very hard or has excessively high TDS, my #1 recommendation to you is the Chanson Nano-Filtration System [see below], because it’s easier, allows for a better water flow, has no complications to worry about, takes up less space, and produces better-tasting water (no rubber bladder, so no rubber taste). If you use well water, but don’t have problems with water hardness or TDS, then the best filtration system for you would be the Chanson Ultra Filtration, described below. 

The Ultimate Water Ionizer Comprehensive Filtration Systems for Well-Water Users:

Water ionizers are now being prescribed by some NDs [Naturopathic Doctors] as “medical devices” in Canada. This is great news! Previously Oriental countries [where water ionizers were invented and have been used and tested for over 40 years] were the only countries that prescribed the use of water ionizers as medical devices. It means that perhaps soon the United States may jump on board, and M.D.’s may start writing prescriptions too. This would help a lot of people to be able to take the tax deduction or even have their insurance company pay for part of the purchase!

Water Ionizer/Medical Device Certification

A water ionizer, as a device, is subject to approval and certification of course, and I believe these certifications are very important to have. Organizations [such as UL, CE, FDA, WQA, etc] certifying water ionizers will decide whether or not it was made in an appropriately certified factory as one of their many criteria. The certifying organization in Korea, which approves the actual medical devices, is the KFDA. If the ionizer has KFDA approval, then whatever ISO rating of the factory has been considered and approved …or they wouldn’t have granted the KFDA approval.

The factories need certification too. KFDA and CE are certificates specific to the product. ISO is specific to the factory and often has to do with the other products being manufactured there. All ISO certificates show quality, and it is not necessary to have them all. Factories apply for the ones they need depending on the products they manufacture at that facility.

ISO 13485 is required for manufacturers sometimes [depends on what, exactly, they manufacture], ISO 9001 and ISO 4001 are also certificates that tell you the manufacturer is a good one. By the way, ISO 9001 and ISO 4001 are certifications that proove the manufacturers are reliable and responsible. Manufacturer ISO ratings are not well understood by most people, and are the subject of some selling tricks.

Another important certificate to look for in the water ionizer itself is the CE certification, which is required to sell medical devices in Europe or Canada. UL is another important certificate, and indicates that the electrical components of the device have been thoroughly examined and conform to UL’s fire-safety standards. The water quality association certificate is important with water ionizers, because it of course involves water filtration.

Water Ionizers Make Sense

It makes sense for doctors to prescribe preventative things like water ionizers for their patients, although the drug companies might not like it, because they really do help people with their health! But of course doctors want proof. That is understandable. I offer lots of proof throughout my website [e.g., check out my Research Videos button above], but here’s just a little bit of great objective proof:

The picture above is an example of Ronnie Ruiz, whose blood was photographed by a nutritional microscopist over 18 months ago. Ronnie’s blood was clearly acidic. It was in a very unhealthy state. The spikes you see in some of the blood cells mean these blood cells are becoming oxidized and there is possibly high cholesterol. The irregularly shaped blood cells are an indication of disease or unhealthy condition in the body. The cells that look like they have a little knob on the end are yeast cells [not a good thing to be in your blood], the blood cells that have shiny white spots in them is a sigh of iron or other nutrient deficiency [i.e., the blood cells are thinning]. The crystals that look like elongated triangles are solidified uric acid. One way our body protects us from acid is to solidify it. If left go very long, these uric acid crystals would find their way to the joints and cause pain [i.e. arthritis].

After drinking alkaline ionized water for 18 months Ronnie’s blood changed dramatically! Look at how round they are, and how evenly shaped! They’re not irregularly sized or shaped for the most part, and there’s no white spots in the middles. There’s no yeast and no signs of nutritional deficiencies or oxidation happening to the cells.

The problems that Ronnie had before drinking alkaline ionized water were: over acidity of body, and oxidation of cells. These are very common problems that probably affect almost everyone in the US. Our diet and lifestyle makes us particularly vulnerable to the problems of oxidation and over-acidity of our bodies. ORP stands for oxidation reduction potential. A water ionizer produces drinking water that is both good for you pH-wise [alkaline] and is good for you oxidation-wize [antioxidizes]. Many scientists in the field of water ionization are now saying [although both are very important] that…

the ORP of the ionized water is even more important in preventing diseases than the pH!

PH: People are very sensitive to pH and blood plasma, for instance, cannot exceed a very narrow range of 7.2 – 7.4 [healthiest at 7.365]. This is why balancing your body pH is so important! Your body will shut down digestion, alter temperature, and rob your bones of calcium to make sure the blood stays in this narrow range. Of course it does this, because the alternative is death. Anything that has the ability to bind with acids and neutralize them is called an alkaline buffer. You help your body tremendously by providing plenty of alkaline buffers [i.e. alkaline ionized water]!

ORP: All liquids have an Oxidation Reduction Potential [ORP]. This is the potential of that liquid to reduce/stop/slow-down oxidation. Oxidation can be seen when you cut an apple in half and leave it open to the air. The oxygen in the air reacts with the apple and oxidizes it [removes a negatively charged electron from it], turning it brown. If you set that apple into a solution with a negative ORP [in other words, a solution with a high antioxidant potential], it wouldn’t turn brown. Put some lemon juice on a cut apple. Lemon juice is full of antioxidants. See how it can stay white for days! Oxidation happening in your body [also can be called "free radical damage"] can be slowed down by adding lots of antioxidants. Only a negative ORP can reduce oxidation. ORP can be measured. Most water [tap & bottled alike] is measured at a positive ORP [+150 to +400]. A water ionizer will take that water, ionize it, and in the process add so many negatively charged electrons that it reduces the ORP to the negative range of -150 to -700 or so [depending on the level of your ionized water]. In other words it makes it contain a fantastic number of natural, easily absorbable antioxidants. Any liquid containing a negative ORP greater than -300 is considered a beneficial substance for your health. You can expect to have better resistance to infection, increased strength and energy, and be younger looking if you drink alkaline ionized water with a -300 or stronger ORP. The ORP of a liquid can be measured with an ORP meter.

Should every water ionizer owner get their own ORP meter?

Heck no! They are expensive and hard to maintain. The pH drops that come with your water ionizer are actually a much more reliable tool to use in measuring if your water ionizer is still ionizing well. Once your water ionizer has been designed and engineered, the ratio of pH to ORP ratio is pretty well set. The stronger the ORP of your ionized water per unit of pH, the healthier that ionized water is for your body. It is a test of the design and quality of the water ionizer to get a stronger [more negative] ORP per unit of pH. If your water ionizer has been tested for ORP levels, and it’s good at first, will probably remain good as long as your electrodes stay clean. You can test for electrode cleanliness by testing your pH at certain levels [i.e. lowest acid, highest alkaline, and level 3 drinking level].  You don’t need to constantly check your water ionizer’s ORP. You can do these pH tests every month [for instance] and record your results. If you start noticing the pH falling over time, then you can also safely assume your ORP is also falling, and it’s time to clean your water ionizer [&/or get an EOS device].

The reason I use both pH and ORP meters is in comparing water ionizers with each other. I do a LOT of comparing water ionizers! If one water ionizer at pH 9.5 gives an ORP of -400 and another at pH 9.5 gives an ORP of -350, then the second one is not as good as the first. I also compare the quality of water storage containers. If after several hours or a day the ORP has dropped more than the pH using one container vs another I will know that container is worse for storing ionized water. I do a lot of testing to see how long ionized water can be stored and still maintain the pH and ORP benefits. One thing I’ve learned from my many tests is that ORP drops more quickly than the pH toward neutral. [Note on water storage: Both pH and ORP drop toward neutral constantly, so for maximum benefits try not to store your ionized water for more hours than you need to. Eight hours is fine, but after 2-3 days your ionized water has dropped pretty close to neutral.]

If you want your own ORP meter, you should know how to clean and maintain it!

For anyone who wishes to have and use their own ORP meter you must know some general principles of how to clean and maintain an ORP meter! Without this understanding, your very expensive ORP meter will be worth exactly $0.00 to you in about a month [or less] after purchasing it. In the following video, we’ll take a look at a couple of ORP meters, and some of the ways that you can clean an ORP meter. Here are some of the ways mentioned in the video:

• Keep the probe from drying out
• Keep the probe in a very low pH [acidic] solution in between uses
• Most ORP meters have a cap that comes with the probe and you can fill the cap with the low acid solution before placing the probe into the cap. Store it in such a way that your liquid doesn’t drain out.
• If your probe dries out between testing, get ready for some heavy-duty cleaning [watch video for this]
• Use a dedicated toothbrush for light scrubbing of the probe
• Use a very, very fine sand paper [such as 220 grit] to get the scale off the probe. Do this only as needed and very lightly.
• Be ready to continue to store your probe in the low acid solution for days [then do repeat cleaning] as shown on the video…until your meter is restored to its correct operation range. Here’s the video:

You may wonder what a report on Alzheimer’s is doing in a water ionizer blog.

Several months ago I did some research for a water-ionizer-blog article I was writing on Fluoride. Fluoride is an acidic element which is eliminated to a great extent [into the acid water stream -- bottom hose of your water ionizer ] when your water is ionized….THANK GOODNESS! 

What I discovered in my Fluoride research had a great impact on me:

Fluoride is linked to Alzheimer’s, learning disabilities and many other diseases.

It’s actually a poison [similar in its effects to lead poisoning]. This discovery hit-home with me, because my Mother had just died of Alzheimer’s and that was an awful disease. It’s the kind of disease where you really actually lose your loved one long before their body dies. In other words, she was so filled with dimentia, she was not herself for years, before she actually died. She actually didn’t remember anything meaningful for life: her family, her past, or even who she was, and this wonderfully strong, smart, and independent woman became a complete dependent until she finally couldn’t even breathe for herself anymore.

In my research I discovered [as many before me had] that the toxic wastes of aluminum manufacturing have been [at the tax-payer's expense] dumped into our water supplies for the past 40+ years! Actually I knew Fluoride was added to the water, but like almost everyone else in the country, I trusted that this additive was safe for us [and needed] or it wouldn’t be added. In my research I discovered vast amounts of reports implicating the ingestion of Fluoride as being linked to many diseases [including Alzheimer's and learning disabilities] and very unsafe, and I also discovered that virtually nothing was being done to stop it.

Back in the day when adding Fluoride was a new idea, the authorities [the people studying Fluoride safety] were the very same scientists who said the atom bomb testing was safe. These were the leading authorities of the day…but were later discredited and found to be biased [in fact they needed to say Fluoride was safe or they would be exposed for the great damages they'd authorized]. What we did [as a country] was: 1. Take the word of people with an agenda [that Fluoride was safe] 2. We set up a system of dumping Fluoride into drinking water, and 3. We never put in the proper checks and balances to ensure this was a good decision, 4. We never re-evaluated to make sure that the actual proper studies were done [by independent non-biased researchers] as to the safety of this Fluoride dumping, 5. We didn’t even re-evaluate when it was discovered that the original “authorities” had an agenda to make Fluoride look good, and 6. We didn’t really research Fluoride well enough to find out that the only real benefit of Fluoride was when it was applied topically, and that ingesting it was poisonous!

We need people to put the pressure on the EPA, other government agencies and their federal, state and local representatives to take action in stopping the dumping of Fluoride into our municipal water. The scientists who gave the stamp of approval to adding fluoride to municipal water all over the country were later discredited as being corrupt. There are no really validated reasons anymore for dumping this poison into our water! At the time when my mother got Alzheimer’s, I didn’t know there was something I could have done, right then, to help her. Since then, I’ve discovered a few things which can be done, and I will share these with you [below]. As I discover more things I’ll add them to my blog. 

What can you do to help reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s?

1. Use a fluoride prefilter or reverse-osmosis-remineralizer to take out all the harmful junk in your water and then add back in all organic, healthy minerals.
2. Use a water ionizer [of course] to get rid of the acidic elements that may remain after prefiltration and alkalize your body.

Brief Summary of Alzheimer’s Article: Dr. Mary Newport live in Fllorida [interestingly near an aluminum manufacturer]. Dr Newport’s husband at the time of the article [July, 2008] was 58 years old and had Alzheimer’s. He started showing signs of it years earlier, and they were very dilligent in getting him all the best treatment. Despite the exceptional care and treatment, his condition worsened very quickly. Dr. Newport continued to study medical journals in hope that she’d find something that helped her husband. Finally, through chance, luck, and probably because she was really looking, she read about a study using a nutritional substance, Ketasyn, which is another name for MCT oil, which was making some impressive improvements in about half the patients. She wanted her husband in that study, but he didn’t qualify [as he was too far gone].
