Why would I need to test the pH and ORP of the VS 70 water ionizer? The reason is that the VS 70 water ionizer is programmable and in order to get the best results, it should be programmed for the specific source water where it will be used.
The first thing that I did, before testing the Chanson VS 70 water ionizer, was to clean my pH and ORP meters. This is done to ensure that the test results are accurate.
Setting the VS-70 Water Ionizer up Step-by-Step
Once I had the meters cleaned, then I tested the Chanson VS 70 water ionizer at the factory settings. These settings will need to be adjusted depending on source water and other factors. I did this for the VS-70 water ionizer and the readings were unsatisfactory, as shown below.
The next thing that I addressed to improve the pH and ORP level of the Chanson VS70 water ionizer was to slow down the flow rate of the water. Since this is an undersink water ionizer that does not have a flow control knob, so I had to adjust the “T valve” (see picture below) that hooks the water ionizer up to the water line under the sink. Once I did this, the readings were much better.
The ORP ratings are not so great on this third test. Although I did achieve a good range in the pH of the alkaline levels.
I had to do a little more adjustment after this to try and correct that. I adjusted the pH settings a little higher, and finally found the correct equilibrium for this machine!
In this fourth test, there is a nice range in pH and the ORP readings are much higher than before for the alkaline settings.
As you can see, programming can take some time, effort and trouble-shooting but once you have set your machine up, you have the use of some very healthy and healing alkaline ionized water right at your fingertips!

The Jupiter Athena water ionizer has been recently improved! There is a new feature added only a few months ago to the Athena water ionizer that I’ll call the “Power Boosting Option”.
The Athena water ionizer power-boosting option is kind of hidden away, like a little secret doorway.
This is an interesting feature. It acts similarly to the alkaline levels. Only it allows you to fine-tune them all with a simple push of a power-boosting button. This is very convenient, because many water ionizers which are ”programmable” are hard to program [you have to go in and program every level] and require lots of trial and error in getting each level set up properly.
Normally, the Athena water ionizer adjusts from “alkaline level one” to “alkaline level four”. This, along with varying your water-flow-rate, allows you to adjust your machine to get the proper pH that you desire. The new power boosting option multiplies your ability to do this ionized water fine-tuning.
I am going to show you, in this video, how the new Athena Water Ionizer Power Boosting option works. I was curious myself how much it would change the pH and ORP on the same alkaline level.
There are 6 levels on this new power boosting function, so to eliminate all variables, I adjusted the flow rate on my external flow control in order to keep the same flow rate with all samples of alkaline water. I then turned the flow control knob on the Athena all the way up each time I poured ionized water. I also kept it at level 3 on the alkaline setting the entire time.

Uses
Here in St. Louis, and at “alkaline level 3″ the new power boosting option does not change the pH and ORP dramatically , but there is a definite difference between power-booster-level 1 and power-booster-level 6. My water is considered medium-hard, and comes into my tap at a pretty high pH level. Therefore, for me, it is not necessary or even desirable to boost this power setting. But, I’d imagine if you had soft water or were using remineralized reverse osmosis water as your source water, boosting the power setting would make a good difference for you. Another thing to consider is if your alkaline ionized water was coming in too strong for you, you could switch the power-booster-setting down to “2″ or “1″ without reducing your ORP by very much. It’s a nice feature.

I did some intensive testing of two KYK Generation II Water Ionizers today. What happened is, I had two returned KYK Generation II water ionizers in a two-week period [extremely unusual] and wanted to find out what was going on with these water ionizers.
What I did find out was
…neither of the KYK GII water ionizers were programmed correctly.
Both Generation II water ionizers were putting out basically filtered water at levels one, two and three [in other words...not ionized water] and then strongest alkaline ionized water at level 4. This initial testing and analyzing of the KYK GII water ionizer is all in the first video, below.
I proceeded to program the Generation II to what I thought was the best settings I had discovered when I re-programmed another Generation II water ionizer a short time earlier. I was sure that using the “already known” best St. Louis-source-water settings would do the trick. But what I discovered was this Generation II water ionizer’s programming was not producing like the other KYK G2 I programmed, so in other words,
…these KYK Generation II water ionizers were not performing reliably despite my hardest efforts.
In the following videos, you can see that I programmed, re-programmed and re-programmed some more until I finally found the right number to set each level at for optimum water ionization. [You can also see the results on the charts below the videos].
The bottom line is that I don’t see average customers being able to do what I did. First of all, average water ionizer customers don’t have ORP and pH meters. Secondly, if they did, it still wouldn’t mean they would be able to operate the ORP and pH meters proficiently. It took me over a year to develop my level of expertise in handling these meters. I’m afraid I have to advise you that…
KYK Generation II Water Ionizers are definitely not easy to use for the average consumer.
If you are considering a KYK G2, or if you are already a KYK G2 owner… I suggest that you call me for assistance in programming if you have any difficulty with this water ionizer.
Many customers think that the KYK Generation II water ionizer has a pH and ORP meter built in, because there are pH and ORP readings on the LCD display. However this is not so.
The KYK G2 display only shows estimates of what the pH and ORP will be at that level of power.
This is confusing to a lot of customers. KYK water ionizers are not the only water ionizers that show pH and ORP on their LCD screens. Plenty of others do this as well. Enagic shows pH estimations on their screen while a voice says “Kangen Water Level 8.5″ or similar statement. All this means in every single case is it’s an estimation. To get the exact information you would need a set of external meters.
There are a few other reasons I think the KYK Generation II water ionizer is difficult for the average customer. It has a computer chip in the filter, which has to be connected via wires from the water ionizer that end with a teeny-tiny plastic clip. I’ve posted a picture of this toward the bottom of this article. If I have trouble with removing or re-inserting these little clips then I know the average customer will too. Also the filters are hard to turn and remove, because there is such a tiny amount of room to get a good grip. Plus, when you lift them up, you need to be ready for a water-spill, since the water-line connects at the bottom of the filter.

It was a pleasure testing and comparing the new Chanson Miracle-Max water ionizer last week. The Chanson Miracle-Max water ionizer, AKA M.A.X., is far better than the Chanson Miracle [regular] water ionizer and it’s only a little more expensive. At a reasonable cost of $1995. [limited introductory price], the purchase of the Chanson Miracle-Max water ionizer is a lot of value for the price.
The manufacturer’s claim was that the M.A.X. could make both strong acid and alkaline water for anyone with ANY water source. The Chanson company claimed the Miracle Max water ionizer [with its huge electrode plates, totalling 364 sq. inches of electrode surface area] is as powerful as an 11-plate semi-commercial water ionizer and powerful enough to be used for disinfecting by doctors, hospitals, dentists, spas, vets, restaurants, the food industry, and home use.
After testing the Chanson Miracle-Max all of last week, I’m ready to say that…
The Chanson Miracle-Max water ionizer is a great water ionizer and lives up to the manufacturer’s claims.
The following features are very good improvements over the other Chanson water ionizers:

The Chanson Miracle-Max has a large mineral port.
The Chanson Miracle-Max is authorized to be used with Himalayan rock salt to boost its ionization for the extremes of high/low pH capability.

Last week I also spent a little time comparing the Miracle Max water ionizer to the Jupiter Athena water ionizer as well. You can see the results, both in the videos and the chart, below. The Miracle Max water ionizer was programmed a bit on the high-side at every level. I do not encourage consumers to program their water ionizer up this high. It’s best to have a nice graduation from Level 1 to Level 4 that makes it an easy progression for your body to adjust to drinking alkaline ionized water. I’ve spent many hours over the past month testing the new AlkaStream Non-Electric water ionizer filter to see how it compares to other water ionizers. I am not going to tell you that the AlkaStream is as good as other water ionizers. No, hands down, when it comes to water ionizers, there is no comparison…
Electric water ionizers are much better.
But, the AlkaStream, which is a non-electric water ionizer. It’s basically a good filter. It’s made in Hong Kong under the direction of Austrailian researcher, Ian Blair. It debuted in the US in November, of 2010. The AlkaStream does a pretty good job actually ionizing, even though its main function is filtration. What it does is purify and soften the water with ion-transfer technology and a variety of filtration media. It claims to reduce the hardness and total dissolved solids [TDS] of the source water, then remineralizes the water [to re-establish the correct levels of calcium and magnesium].
The AlkaStream can be Customized for Variations in Source Water [Hard or Soft Water] Filtration
Finally, the water flows through bioceramics and magnets to lightly ionize the newly purified water.
The Alkastream comes with a diverter to hook it directly to your faucet. It requires monthly maintenance [scrubbing the ceramic filter with fine sandpaper (provided)] and filter changing about once every 6 months to a year. Here’s a demo video. Please note that the first batch of AlkaStreams had a leaking problem. That has now been fixed:
I’ve seen ads stating that the AlkaStream was the “Ultimate Antioxidant Water Filter”. Is this true?
No. It’s not the ultimate, but when compared to water filters, yes, it’s pretty good. It is small, easy to use, attractive, and does a pretty good job of effective purification of the water. What I like best is that it then adds alkalizing and ionizing to the mix. So, if you’re comparing this to Britta, Culligan, or other filtration, yes, it is far better than that. However when compared to electric water ionizers. You can see in my testing videos and charts, below, that the AlkaStream produces about 1/3 the pH and ORP of the electric water ionizers being tested [Melody, Athena, and Enagic SD 501 water ionizers].
The AlkaStream Non-Electric Water Ionizer is cheaper [at first] than electric water ionizers, but it is not designed to last as long as the electric water ionizers I sell. The warranty is for 2 years, and it is designed to last the length of a prefilter housing [which is about 8 years] vs. the typical electric water ionizer I sell is warranted for your lifetime and are known to last 20-30 years. Filter replacements are likely to be more frequent with the AlkaStream [than with regular, electric water ionizers], because they are removing dissolved solids from the water. And, they are fairly expensive to make [because the AlkaStream is basically a filter housing with a filter in it -- the filter is the main thing]. Also, the AlkaStream will only go so far in helping you alkalize and anti-oxidize your body. It performs at the range of the first, introductory, levels of electric water ionizers. This is great for you at first, but after a while I’m guessing you will want to invest in a regular, electric water ionizer to be able to achieve the maximum benefits of the full range of pH [low acid to high alkaline] and ORP [maximum ORP (antioxidant) per unit of pH]. In my own personal experience, the medical savings alone have paid for my water ionizers many-fold over the years. Just as a single example, I went from at least one ear/nose/throat infection per year prior to age 40 to NONE in the 18 years I’ve been drinking ionized water. That’s just me. I have similar examples for the rest of my family and extended family, who have all benefited from that one ionizer I bought 18 years ago.
So, the AlkaStream water ionizer is not, in the long run, cheaper than regular, electric water ionizers.
I don’t recommend the AlkaStream for everyone, but I do think it has a place in the water filtration line-up.
Who is the AlkaStream going to help the most?
Obviously, it is cheaper, so it will benefit anyone who is willing to pay the $399. for good water, but not willing to do the initial investment of over $1,000 for better water. Some ionization [along with good filtration] is a great start. Then after a year or so, the person could of course give the AlkaStream to a family member or friend [or sell it] if they want to upgrade to a regular water ionizer.
But the population I see the AlkaStream as helping most, and the real niche I see for the AlkaStream, is the person whose doctor says they can’t drink high pH water. There are people who have liver disease or other conditions which specifically prohibit the drinking of liquids over the pH of 8.5. For these people, they will get the benefits of ionization [in particular, low negative ORP -- for the antioxidant value] and only slightly raise the pH of their source water. Perhaps in doing this, they can drink more water and gently nurse their bodies back to a more normal state eventually. Actually, in St. Louis, the AlkaStream doesn’t raise the pH of my source water very much…it stays about the same, but the ORP goes from a positive 300 to a negative 150 or so.
Here’s an actual example. My mother-in-law has only ever been able to drink ionized water at the “purified water” level or Level 1 [8.5] of a regular water ionizer. For some reason she ends up with diarhea if she drinks water that is higher than our St. Louis 9.4 pH source water. In St. Louis, this is a challenge usually [to get ionized water without raising our already high pH]. But with the AlkaStream I was able to get her -175 ORP ionized water [by reducing total dissolved solids then adding back only the healthy, needed minerals] without raising the pH at all. Her body is responding well to this water so far.
Testing and Results:
The following videos and charts show my testing and comparing of the AlkaStream. I compared it with the Jupiter Melody, Jupiter Athena and Enagic SD 501 water ionizers set at level 3 [or Kangen water 9.5].
In the first set of water ionizer comparisons, the AlkaStream performed better than the second set. This is probably because the AlkaStream was brand new at the time of the first testing and a week or so [of use] old during the second set. Therefore the second set of the water ionizer comparisons [with the Athena and Enagic water ionizers] were more accurate.
Any filter will have more loose mineral content in the form of powder at first. This increases the pH and ORP results for new filter testing. When this gets dissolved it will settle down to more normal readings.
The second set of comparisons [between the AlkaStream and the Athena and Enagic water ionizers] were more realistic of what to expect in the performance of the AlkaStream.

Part of my purpose with this series of water ionizer tests was to compare how well the ionized water stored.
I had heard stories that the AlkaStream would do better. Actually they all four did about equal to each other and because I used better storage methods than ever before, they all did quite well in maintaining the pH and ORP over time. I have one more video to do, which is after about a month of storage, so look back for those results to be added to this post in about the beginning of February.
You might notice that the pH actually didn’t change much at all with the storage over hours or days, while the ORP dropped. That’s because -ORP is directly related to -H [negatively charged Hydrogen] in the ionized water [which gives it the quality of being the simplest, most basic, antioxidant in the world. Hydrogen is of course a very light gas and will find its way to escape even the most "sealed" locations. I suppose if it were vaccume packed it might not escape [but even then, I'm not sure]. This series of tests has pretty good results for the storage of ionized water [for all four water ionizers]. The reason is the fact that I used glass jars with rubber-sealed lids, screwed them on tightly, and didn’t open them until it was time to test them.
What can be learned about storing ionized water?
I believe a lesson has been learned here in this series of water ionizer tests. The results suggest that to get the best storage of your ionized water one should:
Use glass jars or bottles with rubber-sealed lids or caps.
Fill the bottle to the very top — leave no gap.
Don’t open the bottle until you intend to drink the water.
You also should consider filling multiple small jars/bottles rather than a few larger containers. This way you won’t be opening them hours before use, and you’ll be more likely to get the full benefits of best storage for your ionized water.

Whenever I’ve compared the Venus Water Ionizer with the Melody, KYK, Tyent, etc. it has always tested a bit lower than those other water ionizers in most areas. It is less expensive than the other Jupiter water ionizers, and so one would expect it to test a little lower. It is a pretty good water ionizer though. That’s why today I’m going to take a minute to tell you about the Venus water ionizer and show you some testing videos I’ve done.
The Venus water ionizer is a Jupiter water ionizer, and so has the Jupiter advantage. Here are some of Jupiter Water Ionizers’ superior attributes:
Jupiter water ionizers use the Biostone filters. Biostone filters can be purchased for city water [Biostone Plus] or for well water [or people with immune disfunctions] [Biostone .01] .
The Jupiter company is the oldest water ionizer company who is still selling water ionizers in the US.
The Jupiter water ionizers come with a lifetime parts warranty and 5-year parts/labor warranty.
Here are my testing videos:
A little story behind this testing is that a friend of mine in Phoenix bought this water ionizer but couldn’t get the acid water to go below about a 5 pH and the ionized water was a bit cloudy. He was convinced the water ionizer was no good because of this. However, in Phoenix the water is very hard plus it has a high TDS [total dissolved solids]. The combination of the extremely hard water and high TDS was just too much for the Venus and it wasn’t getting good ionization under those circumstances. However here in St. Louis the Venus water ionizer is testing great [as you can see by the videos and charted results below]. The quality of the source water makes a big difference in a water ionizer’s performance. My friend lives in an apartment and with limitations on what he can do and he isn’t in a position to be able to install a scale-block prefilter or reverse osmosis. So he exchanged the Venus for an Orion water ionizer. The Orion is able to get better ionization than the Venus in Phoenix water, so he has decided to keep the Orion. It’s not perfect, though, and the only way to really fix a problem like that so the ionizer works perfectly is to use prefilters and anti-scaling devices or a reverse-osmosis-remineralizer. Unfortunately with differing water qualities around the country some people have to do more and spend more to get their water quality straightened out.
The Jupiter Venus water ionizer isn’t as strong of an ionizer as many of the other water ionizers I sell. It doesn’t get as good ORP per unit of pH as the Melody [....which doesn't get as good as the Orion, Athena, Aquarius, or Delphi water ionizers], but in its own right it is a very good water ionizer and is worth mentioning. I would say if you can afford to get a better water ionizer I suggest you get a water ionizer in the “best” category [better ORP per unit of pH..such as the Orion, Athena, Aquarius, Tyent and Miracle water ionizers], but in my mind there is a “near best” category [Melody, IonQuench] and a “very good” category [Venus and Eden] which are worthy of consideration especially for young and healthy families on a tight budget who don’t live in areas with very hard water. For my family and me during our first 15 years of drinking ionized water we knew only one ionizer, the old Ange water ionizer, which would test lower in comparison with any of the water ionizers we sell on my site today, and we were just as happy as we could be with it.

Comparison Testing of the Genesis Platinum and IonQuench Water Ionizers
I wanted to test the IonQuench water ionizer against the Genesis Platinum water ionizer, because even though both water ionizers are made by the same manufacturer [EOS in Korea] and they are both the newest upgrade of the KYK water ionizer I wasn’t sure if they would test out the same. There was some talk about the Genesis Platinum having more watts, and that could make a difference, so I wanted to see if it did. The bottom line is that actually the IonQuench did better than the Genesis Platinum in this series of tests. The IonQuench also has a 7-year warranty [verses the Genesis Platinum water ionizer's 5-year warranty], so I am pretty confident that the IonQuench water ionizer is the better choice between the two.

All-in-all I’m pretty surprised that the IonQuench did better than the Genesis Platinum water ionizer. After hearing claims that the Platinum was better I was expecting to see far better results with the Platinum water ionizer.
Programming the IonQuench and Genesis Platinum Water Ionizers
Before the testing, above, I programmed both water ionizers to be at exactly the same levels. For anyone wishing to do their own programming of their IonQuench or Genesis Platinum, you should read the directions that come with your water ionizer. However the instructions are too brief and at times unclear, so watching this following video may help to clarify some of the more confusing points in the programming instructions.

I just finished testing and comparing the Jupiter Orion water ionizer against my own water ionizer, the Athena water ionizer. Both water ionizers are made by the same manufacturer, Jupiter water ionizers, but they have a $300. difference in price. I always assumed that the Athena was the best, so I guess I skipped right over the Orion water ionizer and its fraternal twin, the Aquarius water ionizer [the Orion and Aquarius water ionizers are exactly the same on the inside, but look different on the outside], in doing all my comparing and analyzing of water ionizers.
The bottom line is the Orion water ionizer tests equal to the Athena water ionizer!

According to the results of the testing, there is very little variation in pH and ORP from one ionizer to the other. This is exactly as I had predicted, because they are virtually the same water ionizer except for the flow control knob and the extra filter in the Athena water ionizer.
Another thing that impressed me with the Orion water ionizer was the sheer beauty of it. Below is a photo of the IonQuench installed. In this particular installation, it is getting its water from a G2 Faucet which feeds it water directly from the plumbing. The IonQuench water ionizer is mounted to the wall and on the bottom-left under the IonQuench you can see an Ionizer Armor. The Ionizer Armor will help protect the water ionizer against hard water scaling.

I’ve just finished testing the KYK Genesis water ionizer in Clearwater, Florida, and got great, FANTASTIC, results!
I’ve had to do a little business and personal traveling last week and this week, so I thought I’d bring two water ionizers along and test them to see how they do. My first stop was Florida. I was so busy, that I could only test one water ionizer, so I picked the KYK [since I'm doing a big project on the KYK Genesis right now]. Circumstances were such that I didn’t even get a chance to hook the KYK up until Saturday [ yesterday] just before it was time for me to leave. My camera was all set to go, then the battery died! So I did test the KYK Genesis water ionizer, but unfortunately I have no video to share with you on this testing. Here’s the chart of the results:

Here’s my analysis:
Level 1 seems weak, however if you consider that you’re taking the ORP from a positive 565 and changing it to a negative 40 it is amazing, really.
Levels 2 and 3 are just fantastic! To get that high of a negative ORP for your drinking water [without having to jack the pH up too high -- is really, really exemplary!
Level 4 [highest alkaline]: This is a little on the weak side, compared with other 7-plate water ionizer testing. Perhaps it has to do with the source water. It’s not bad, but I wouldn’t expect it to emusify oils at that level. So if you intend to soak vegetables to emulsify the pesticides and get your veggies completely free of these pesticides…I’m not sure you can do it unless you got a higher pH than about 11.
Low Acid Setting: Again, this is weak with this source water. The KYK was able to get higher extremes [a higher alkaline pH and lower acid pH] on Level 4 in St. Louis than in Florida. This isn’t anything against this particular brand of water ionizer, it has to do with the source water.
Look forward to more testing of the KYK Genesis this week. I plan to test and compare the KYK Genesis water ionizer and the Tyent Turbo water ionizer. So, stay tuned!
