What are the health benefits of calcium in alkaline ionized water?

I have gotten this question regarding the health benefits of calcium in alkaline ionized water in one form or another many times.  I’d like to address it here:

Question: “I boiled my alkaline ionized water and this is what it looked like.  What are the white flecks?” 

Answer: The white flecks in your alkaline ionized water are actually Calcium, Calcium Carbonate to be exact.  The above picture is an extreme example, because this customer lives in an area of extreme water hardness, but don’t be alarmed if you see a few white flecks in your alkaline ionized water, especially if you boil it.

The first thing to know is that usually calcium is dissolved into the structure of the water molecules so well that you can’t see it, but boiling [or even ionizing] the water will un-dissolve some of the calcium. It’s similar to putting a few tablespoons of salt in a glass of water and then stirring. After a minute or two, you won’t see the salt anymore, because it will dissolve.  

The second thing to know is that alkaline ionized water will contain more Calcium than your tap water because Calcium is an alkaline mineral. Inside the ionization chamber [water cell] of your water ionizer it is split into two “poles”, alkaline and acidic. The alkaline minerals are drawn to the alkaline “pole” while the acidic minerals are attracted to the acidic pole. Therefore there will be a greater concentration of alkaline minerals in your alkaline ionized water.

The third, and most important thing to know is that…

Calcium is very healthy for you. 

As a matter of fact, studies have been done revealing that people who live in hard water areas [which basically means they have more calcium in their water] live longer and have less disease in general than those living in soft-water areas. Is it possible to get too much calcium in alkaline ionized water?

The amount of calcium you will get via alkaline ionized water will be insignificant compared to what you’d get in a calcium tablet, for instance. People who take tablets and tablets of calcium daily would possibly come to a point where they were taking too much calcium, but the small amount of calcium in alkaline ionized water is not a problem at all. Check your alkaline setting, though, on your water ionizer and, for drinking, don’t set it too high. The ideal alkalinity for alkaline ionized water is 8.5 to 9.5 pH. Setting your water ionizer too high will make your alkaline ionized water have more minerals in it and that may make it taste less desirable to you (although I like the taste myself), it also may be too alkaline for the most efficient entry into your body. The Science Behind It: The cuticle is the outermost hair-layer surrounding each hair shaft] .

Ionized water is best fresh. But, obviously sometimes you have to store ionized water for some period of time. It would be impractical to bring your ionizer to work with you! I often get questions about what is the best way to store alkaline ionized water, so I have taken the liberty to test a variety of bottles to see which one stores ionized water the best.

By the way, the best way to fill the bottles of ionized water is to over-fill them and carefully cap them in such a way as to try to get no air bubble.

When you do this it will maintain the pH and ORP much better.

ORP: Oxidation Reduction Potential [the antioxidant value of the ionized water] tends to degrade with exposure to air of ionized water. ORP is one of the main qualities of ionized water that makes it so healthy.  A low negative ORP is what we are looking for. This will give you lots of antioxidants. The lower the better.

PH:  A good drinking pH is anywhere from 8.5 to 10. The pH of ionized water tends to keep [store] much longer than the ORP.  PH will reduce with exposure to air but not anywhere near the degree that ORP will.

Storing for 1-2 hours

In these videos, I test the ionized water before filling the bottles and then fill them with as little air bubble as possible. Then I wait for a couple hours and test again.

As you can see, the mason jar was almost exactly the same ORP and pH as the original ionized water before it was stored! This is THE best way to store ionized water. One key thing to do is to ensure that there is no air bubble in the container.

Storing for One Day

Here are some results from further [off-video] testing I did with storing ionized water. I let some containers sit for one day with ionized water. These are some, but not all, of the containers shown in the video above.

As you can see, the mason jar wins again, by a long shot. The glass bottle is a close second.

So if you have to store your ionized water while at work or for any other reason, consider using a mason jar. This is a good way to keep the ionized water as “fresh” as possible.

I had a customer who requested I test several different flavor enhancers to try to find out…

Is there a good flavor-aid or flavor-enhancer to use with ionized water [one that wouldn't destroy the pH and ORP of the ionized water]?

I have done this kind of testing before, however only found that citric acid, if added to a drink, will make the drink acidic, but because of its alkaline ash will probably not reverse the benefits of drinking ionized water. In other words, drinking a healthy lemonade or iced-green-tea & stevia drink is a very good and refreshing drink, however…

I DO NOT suggest that you use additives exclusively.

This will not help to alkalize your body in the long run. I have tried it and it doesn’t pan out in real life to feel or be as good as drinking ionized water by itself. Here are some of my earlier blog posts:

Which Water Ionizer is Best?

That’s a hard question to answer, because it’s kind of like buying a car. But, just like with cars, there are certain companies who have been making water ionizers longer, who are more trustworthy, more reliable and who have scientists and engineers on their design team who truly understand the process and issues connected with making water ionizers. • Storing: The best container to use with ionized water is a glass [or hard plastic] smaller [1 quart or less] bottle with a lid that has a rubber seal in it. Fill the bottle to the brim [no air space will help to retain the ORP of the ionized water better]. • Babies: Babies should drink filtered water [select the "purified" setting rather than an alkaline setting until the baby is about 2 years old...or unless the baby appears to have allergies.
• Children: 2-4 year-olds should be given alkaline ionized water at level 1 or 2 [8.0 - 8.5 pH].
• Pets: Pets like alkaline water just like people do. Use lower levels for baby animals just as you do children.
• Plants: Plants like acidic water. Collect the acid water from the bottom hose in fill bottles to use for watering your plants.
• Stain Remover: Use the highest alkaline your ionizer can produce [10.5 pH or higher] to dab on stain or dip stained spot into. It will loosen up the stains of chocolate, gravy, soda, coffee, blood and other hard-to-clean substances. After a minute, rub lightly and watch stain disappear. • Grease Cutter/Degreaser: Use the highest alkaline your ionizer can produce [10.5 pH or higher] to clean around stoves or clean grease off dishes & pans and as a pre-wash for fine washables or other laundry.
• Germicidal: Acid water at a pH of 4 or below should be sprayed on surfaces where you wish to kill germs [i.e., toilets, sinks, counters, tables]

Which Container is Best for Storing Ionized Water?

I often get this question from my water ionizer customers, and have been working on discovering the very best methods of storing ionized water for a while now. So far, I’ve discovered that leaving no gap of air inside the container makes a huge difference in the ability to store ionized water and retain the ORP [antioxidant value], which usually escapes in just a few hours of storage. Also, glass appears to be the best container for retaining the ORP and pH values of the ionized water the longest.

The three containers I used in this trial were: 1) a glass jar [the kind used for jamming], 2) a plastic, BPA free, jar with a pull-type top, and 3) a dark, plastic, BPA-free container with a flip-type spout.  The water ionizer I used was the Jupiter Athena water ionizer.

The videos are all posted here in order. Beginning/pouring note: I filled each container to the brim in attempts to have no air-gap in the bottle at all. The second container was impossible to do this completely because of the cap design. I tested them at different intervals and have posted the results, below, on a chart for your easy reference.

Conclusions: The glass jar is best for storing ionized water, however if you’re drinking the water within a couple of hours, using a plastic, bpa-free, container filled to the brim is good too. The flip-top lid appears to be a bad design for retaining ORP. So avoid lids that have a way for gas to escape.

Is the Enagic $3800. Water Ionizer the best water ionizer there is?

No. There are many comparible water ionizers [such as the Jupiter Melody as you can see in the demonstrations in this article] and some that are better than the Enagic Kangen water [such as the Athena and Tyent Turbo as you can see in previous demonstrations], so No, Enagic is not the best there is. It’s a good, even great, water ionizer though, so I have no intention to down-grade it. However, I have tested and used these, and many other water ionizers, for years, and that’s why I simply know. I know the truth of the ionizers compared, and so when I hear stories from MLMers that the Enagic water ionizer is like no other or better than all others I will know there is a lie somewhere. I always ask, “in what way is the Enagic claimed to be better?” The answers I have heard are amazing to me, because they are based on hear-say only. One MLMer tells their downline, and they tell their downline, and they tell everyone they see. When asked for specifics, I’ll hear things like “better ORP” or “the ORP lasts longer”. I’ve actually tested and used these water ionizers, and though I would consider the Jupiter Melody a little bit less quality ORP than the Enagic, they are very close as you can see compared here.

Which water ioizer will hold its ORP the longest?

That is what I’m testing in today’s post. I have done a series of water ionizer comparisons which you can see below [the videos, charts and summaries for each set of tests]. I tested the ionized water immediately after pouring it as “Enagic-Melody-Comparison-1″. Then after an hour and 13 min. I tested all levels again [Enagic-Melody-Comparison-2]. Then continued to test at intervals and you can see for yourself that the ORP dropped at the same rate [I mean identical] for each water ionizer.

Another important piece of information you can learn from this post is …

How long will ionized water stay ionized?

This is a great question, and the answer is that the pH will last for a pretty long time [if sealed in a good container], but even sealed in the best container, the ORP will drop significantly after an hour at levels 1 and 2. It will drop significantly after 3 hours for levels 3 and 4. Therefore, my advice to anyone is to try to drink your ionized water fresh. The idea of storing it for days is fine if that’s all you can do, but I really, strongly advise you to just bite the bullet and buy your own water ionizer.

How else do the Melody and Enagic compare? This is important to LOOK at, because you can literally buy 3 Melodies for the price of one Enagic! Melody water ionizers also have a lifetime warranty on parts [vs. Enagic's 5-year warranty], so take a look at the other comparisons. You can see that in many ways, the Melody is a better water ionizer than the Enagic, and in some ways the Enagic is better. But they are both great, reputable water ionizers from very good and trustworthy manufacturers.

The Tyent and Enagic water ionizers’ flow control issues can be a problem, but they’re not so hard to solve.

Several water ionizers have flow-control issues [e.g., Tyent, Jupiter Orion, KYK Generation II, & Genesis Platinum], but the Tyent and Enagic are being featured in this article. The PH and ORP of your ionized water are obviously important to you when you are drinking that ionized water. For several reasons it is very desirable to be able to fine-tune the water flow rate of your water ionizer. Why?

• Some water ionizers will not give you desirable water flow rates if hooked directly to your plumbing, so they are typically thought to only be able to hook to a faucet with a diverter. The KYK and Enagic are good examples of this. If you hooked either of these directly to your plumbing the flow rate on the KYK would be 3 liters/min [which isn't so bad, but you wouldn't be able to get the better pH/ORP ranges that the KYK is known for.] The Enagic would come out at 6-8 liters/min. and your results would be much reduced from the Enagic’s capabilities.
• New water ionizer owners want to gradually build up to higher levels of pH and ORP. An ability to finely control your water flow rate will help you to do that.
• It’s nice to be able to just turn on the faucet and get your ionized water without thinking about the water flow rate, because you have already pre-set the flow rate. Using a simple device you can do that. The few seconds this saves you every time you pour your ionized water will add up to minutes and hours over time.
• If you compare two water ionizers side-by-side, it is essential and crucial to the results to get those flow rates exactly the same.

When a water ionizer doesn’t come with a flow control knob, then most people think their only option is to rely on the faucet to control their water flow. Not so. Watch the following two videos to see what the use of a simple “Quick-Connect” water flow-rate valve can do for your water ionizer’s pH and ORP performance.

The other day my niece was working with me painting one of my apartments, and I noticed that she drank Gatorade in great quantities all day long. All told I think she drank 3 32-oz. bottles in a 3-hour period. So, I asked her why she drank so much Gatorade…and was surprised by her answer.

She said, “It’s a healthy drink. It’s got electrolytes and potassium in it and sports champions drink it, so it has to be healthy.” She also said she always makes sure to drink a lot of Gatorade whenever she’s working out or sweating a lot.

The reason this surprised me was how certain she was that this was a healthy drink! According to the bottle itself it had very little nutritional value, including almost no potassium. The advertising is obviously very good. People are willingly paying about $2.00 per bottle for pure flavored junk.

The store-keeper at the local “quick-shop” said he runs out of Gatorade all the time. He has “Power-Aid” in stock, but not Gatorade. I, not being educated in the differences between the two drinks, asked my niece if Power-Aid was as good to drink as Gatorade…and she said it was almost equal.  It’s interesting that Gatorade always sells out.

Anyway, when we got home my niece had a little Gatorade left in her bottle. I asked her if I could test it to see how acid it was. I was assuming it was around as acidic as Kool-aid [which is around a 4 pH]. I was truly shocked to see that Gatorade [supposedly a HEALTH DRINK] tested out at a 2.7 pH. That is extremely acidic and definitely an UNHEALTHY drink. Here’s the video:

Athletes who are fooled into drinking this as a power drink are going to end up with arthritis, heart disease, allergies, colds, cancer and many other diseases if they drink this like water [i.e., as much as my niece does...or I should say, "did". My niece is going to cut down on Gatorade now that she knows how acidic it is.]

For athletes who really want a healthy drink full of electrolytes… mix up some fresh lemonade [use real lemons and ionized water]. Then go out and test your own performance. I guarantee you will see just as good a burst of power as you get with Gatorade [or better]…but the difference is that you won’t be risking your health with your “power-drink”. Plus it will be a heck of a lot cheaper.

A customer asked me the other day if he boiled acid water, would it become more neutral or remain acidic. I hadn’t done this test before, and I didn’t know. So, I got some acid water from my Athena water ionizer and boiled it to find out what happened. Here’s the video:

For water ionizer owners who aren’t able to watch the above video, here’s the results. The acid water started out at 3.3 pH and after boiling and cooling down enough to test it, the water tested at 3.5 pH. So almost no change was made in the water’s acidity.

On the other hand, whenever I’ve boiled alkaline water and let it cool, and tested it, I’ve seen drastic changes in the pH and ORP [like going from a 10 pH down to a 6].
