I used to be a lot like Dr. Mercola. [who is a world-famous nutritional-healing advocate and who also owns a huge online vitamin & natural-remedy store].

Dr. Mercola is an avid natural-healing advocate, and I am too.

Ever since my first child was born in 1974, I have been enthusiastically seeking out answers to “how to stay healthy, keep my children healthy, and never get sick”. In my first 20 years of being a mother I read every book I could, related to nutrition and natural healing. I visited health food stores regularly. I bought various nutritional products, herbs, etc. both for preventative measures and remedies.  And whenever I got sick [or one of my children] I got a remedy or two out to fix it. Even so, we did [all of us] end up at the doctor each 2 or more times a year for various things [ear aches, infections, sore throats, etc.] . When my first two children went through puberty, they got the usual acne. I think we were pretty typical of a normal, mostly-healthy, family.

I didn’t have a PHD, MD or ND behind my name, but I had a masters in education, 20 years of parental experience, and I was a self-taught expert in natural remedies by the time my first child was 20.

The reason I was like Dr. Mercola is that he is always reading and learning about the latest natural-healing remedies out there. But why did using a water ionizer cause me to change?

It’s interesting to me how much my point of view has changed since the time my first two children were young.

What happened to change my point of view?… a water ionizer.

Around the time my 3^rd child was 9, my 4^th child was 6 and my 5^th child was 3, I was introduced to the concept of ionized water and the pH of our bodies . This was a pivotal point in my life as an expert in Nutrition and a mother. I bought my first water ionizer in 1996 and that single action [although the water ionizer was an older, weaker model than most any water ionizer you can buy today] changed our lives.

What did a water ionizer do that all of the other books and remedies in the entire health-food store not do?

A water ionizer helped my family and I to change the water in our bodies, so as to provide our cells with more suitable water for detoxifying and maintaining the perfect pH balance that our bodies and cells need to be truly healthy.

All the rest of the “preventions” and “cures” became obsolete and un-needed after just months of drinking alkaline ionized water.

I didn’t just buy a water ionizer, by the way. I learned all about body pH, water, water pH, and water ionization uses AND I applied what I learned by actually drinking the ionized water [and having my children drink it.]

I also observed. I saw that ionized water was making a difference in our family’s health. So, I did more. If I saw any hint of illness [a sniffle] I would have whoever it was drink more ionized water as the antidote for whatever germs may be trying to invade. Whether it was my own self or one of my children …or even my husband, I would utter my famous words “here, drink more water”. It was almost a family joke that I was so insistent on all of us drinking the ionized water so much.

What happened was miraculous though. All of the runny noses, ear aches, head aches, sore throats, acid reflux, and other little defects in our health started to disappear. Even allergies that I was sure were genetic and unavoidable disappeared. As each of my three younger children reached puberty they were virtually free of the acne problems experienced by my older two children.

Before water ionizers I was a self-taught nutritional expert trying to stay abreast of all the latest nutritional answers, preventions and cures, but now I have found a single, simple answer that has changed everything and put all the rest of the “answers” into perspective.

Unless your body has an excellent and continual supply of just exactly the right water to support what your body needs, all the other remedies in the entire world will still not be good enough. Water is KEY to your body’s good and stable health. Ionized water is PERFECT for your body. Drinking ionized water helps your body to be perfect.

With all my other knowledge about vitamins and nutrition in general, I would be remiss to not mention that of course you need to eat well [well-balanced and properly-combined meals] and DO take your vitamins. However, with ionized water I predict you will find that the answer to most ailments is “drink more water”.

I get many questions about water quality and filtration, and where there is uncertainty about a person’s water quality I often recommend using one of my test kits. The main reasons for uncertainty about water quality are: 1) a person has their own well and they don’t regularly test all of the elements of water quality for their well-water, and 2) a person lives in an older home or community and there are old, questionable, pipes bringing the water to their tap. I have a company policy to pay for this test kit for the customer, by the way, provided they buy their water ionizer from me.

Prior to writing this blog post, I hadn’t actually taken apart and done one of our “Water Test Kits” before, and I was curious as to how useful and accurate they really are. Plus I wanted to know how easy or hard the test kits were to use.

The city water test kit tests for bacteria, lead, chlorine, pesticides, nitrates/nitrites, hardness, and pH.

The Results

How to Interperet Results

Bacteria:

Bacteria is the test recommended to be done first. The reason is that it takes 48 hours to get your results from this test. I imagine the time delay is to allow bacteria to grow [if there are any]. This test is self explanatory and easy to do.

Why test for bacteria? There are various different kinds of bacteria that can be in water, and they all can make you sick. If you have municipal water, the water company regulates these things daily, so there shouldn’t be much worry, but if you have well water or spring water, you might want to regularly test for bacteria yourself to be on the safe side.

Lead:

Per the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for lead is zero. The reason for this is that any lead is poisonous to people. Drinking water with lead in it can cause children to delay in physical or mental developement and can also cause learning disabilities. In adults, lead can cause kidney problems and high blood pressure. In older buildings, lead can be a concern even when the city tests show no lead in the water leaving the municipal plant. If there was any lead sodder used anywhere along the pipeline, it could potentially leach into the water passing through that line. I have a customer who lives in an older building in the city of St. Louis, and I used her water for this test. It’s very nice to see her water tested negative.

Lead is a problem in the city sometimes due to old pipes giving off lead. I got this water from a very old builing, so I did want to see if that would be a problem.

This test was very simple to do. There is some wait time so be prepared, but other than that not too complicated.

Chlorine:

Per the EPA the MCL of chlorine in drinking water is 4mg/L. This can cause eye and nose irritation and stomach discomfort. Our test was well below that. We tested at 1ppm(parts per million) which converts to .99mg/L.

This test was very simple and easy to do. You just immerse the test strip in the water for a brief period of time and wait a few seconds and compare the color to the color chart given in the instructions.

Pesticides:

There are many many different kinds of pesticides all for various pests that you may find. Because there are so many different pesticides, there are many different side effects. Some of them irritate the skin and eyes, some of them effect the endocrine system, etc. Obviously we don’t want this in our water. This test should be negative.

This test was done in the same way as the Lead test. Wasn’t difficult at all, just a little wait time.

Nitrates/Nitrites:

These come from runoff of fertilizers, or leaking septic tanks(which can be a problem in the city). It is also a natural deposit. Per the EPA, the MCL of Nitrates is 10mg/L and for Nitrites is 1mg/L. So our test was acceptable in the St Louis city water. Apparently if infants drink water that contains more than the MCL, they can become very ill.

This test was done in the same way as the chlorine test. It was very simple and easy to do.

Hardness:

Water is considered soft or hard according to the ppm or gpg of calcium and magnesium in the water. Most references report the following: •Soft: Below 17 ppm [or 0-1 gpg] •Medium: 18 – 75 ppm [or 1 - 4 gpg] •Medium Hard: 76 – 150 ppm [or 4 - 8 gpg] •Hard: 151 – 200 ppm [or 7 – 11 gpg] •Very Hard: Over 200 ppm [or over 11 gpg **Very, Very Hard: Over 300 ppm [Note: can go as hard as 500 or more ppm]. Above 200ppm, I would suggest doing prefiltration if you have a water ionizer.

Surprisingly enough this test used a simple test strip and took hardly any time at all. It was done just like the Chlorine and Nitrate tests.

pH:

We have talked about this many times. A pH of 8.5 to 10 is desirable for drinking. Above that might be too alkaline. You wouldn’t want to drink below 7pH.

This test was very easy to administer.

Overall

This city water test was pretty simple. Do ensure that you read the instructions. It doesn’t take too much time. You can do almost all of the tests in a 15-20 min time slot (and then an extra 48 hours before reading the results of the bacteria test).

Shampoo is most often found at a high alkaline pH. A high pH solution applied to your hair will open up the hair cuticles , and expose it to becoming dry and damaged.

When you rinse with water at a pH of about 3.0 to 4.0, this low pH water combines with the high pH of your newly washed hair and restores it to its ideal pH of about 5.5.

The Jupiter Athena water ionizer has been recently improved!  There is a new feature added only a few months ago to the Athena water ionizer that I’ll call the “Power Boosting Option”.

The Athena water ionizer power-boosting option is kind of hidden away, like a little secret doorway.

This is an interesting feature.  It acts similarly to the alkaline levels. Only it allows you to fine-tune them all with a simple push of a power-boosting button. This is very convenient, because many water ionizers which are ”programmable” are hard to program [you have to go in and program every level] and require lots of trial and error in getting each level set up properly.

Normally, the Athena water ionizer adjusts from “alkaline level one” to “alkaline level four”.  This, along with varying your water-flow-rate, allows you to adjust your machine to get the proper pH that you desire. The new power boosting option multiplies your ability to do this ionized water fine-tuning.

I am going to show you, in this video, how the new Athena Water Ionizer Power Boosting option works.  I was curious myself how much it would change the pH and ORP on the same alkaline level.

There are 6 levels on this new power boosting function, so to eliminate all variables, I adjusted the flow rate on my external flow control in order to keep the same flow rate with all samples of alkaline water.  I then turned the flow control knob on the Athena all the way up each time I poured ionized water.  I also kept it at level 3 on the alkaline setting the entire time.

Here in St. Louis, and at “alkaline level 3″ the new power boosting option does not change the pH and ORP dramatically , but there is a definite difference between power-booster-level 1 and power-booster-level 6.  My water is considered medium-hard, and comes into my tap at a pretty high pH level. Therefore, for me, it is not necessary or even desirable to boost this power setting. But, I’d imagine if you had soft water or were using remineralized reverse osmosis water as your source water, boosting the power setting would make a good difference for you. Another thing to consider is if your alkaline ionized water was coming in too strong for you, you could switch the power-booster-setting down to “2″ or “1″ without reducing your ORP by very much. It’s a nice feature.
