I often get questions asking if heating or cooling ionized water from one of our water ionizers will change it.  I have tested the effects of heating & cooling ionized water many times before, but recently have discovered the importance of protecting the ionized water from the air. Exposing ionized water to the air causes it to lose its antioxidant valur at a much faster pace. Today I’m trying to find out more about what happens when you heat or cool ionized water.

Because I already know from many tests done in the past that exposing ionized water to air decreases the ORP, I did my best to eliminate the air variable in order to have a more accurate test.

Note: PH and ORP meters cannot take such extremes in temperature, so I had to let the containers holding the frozen and boiling water sit in room temperature long enough to be able to test it.

Results

pH Before ORP Before pH After ORP After Temp
Microwave 10.7 -764 10.4 -755 108
Boil 10.7 -735 9.9 103 212
Fridge 10.6 -755 10.5 -385 45
Freeze 10.4 -755 10 -460 32
Cup of ice water 11 -785 11 -770 32

Conclusions

  • Boiling ionized water does significantly decrease its health value. It will take the negative ORP [anti-oxidant value] out of the water and will even reduce the pH somewhat. [However, even after being boiled, ionized water is still far better than tap water, un-ionized.]
  • Freezing ionized water does not, by itself, reduce its health value very much. As long as you take precautions to not expose the ionized water to air, your frozen ionized water should be good.
  • Warming your ionized water does not seem to reduce the health value much [unless you bring it to a high temperature]. Note: In our experiment, we brought it up to 108 degrees.
  • Adding ice [especially if the ice was made of ionized water] doesn’t decrease its health value.

Suggestions Based on the Test Results

After evaluating the results of these tests, I can safely say that it’s fine to warm your ionized water slightly or to add ice to it. Boiling your ionized water for drinking it is for the most part not suggested.

After over 16 years of drinking alkaline ionized water, I can say with conviction that the very best thing I could give to myself or a loved one is a WATER IONIZER! Give yourself and your family the gift of health this year!

PH drops use a mixture of three chemicals, which cause a blend of interesting color changes when dropped into solutions of different pH levels. See more details below. It is very handy to have pH drops to periodically test your ionized water. This helps you to determine if your water ionizer is functioning at peak performance over time.

Best Bottles to Store Ionized Water

Aug 19 · by Cathleen LoGrasso

Ionized water is best fresh. But, obviously sometimes you have to store ionized water for some period of time. It would be impractical to bring your ionizer to work with you! I often get questions about what is the best way to store alkaline ionized water, so I have taken the liberty to test a variety of bottles to see which one stores ionized water the best.

By the way, the best way to fill the bottles of ionized water is to over-fill them and carefully cap them in such a way as to try to get no air bubble.

When you do this it will maintain the pH and ORP much better.

ORP: Oxidation Reduction Potential [the antioxidant value of the ionized water] tends to degrade with exposure to air of ionized water. ORP is one of the main qualities of ionized water that makes it so healthy.  A low negative ORP is what we are looking for. This will give you lots of antioxidants. The lower the better.

PH:  A good drinking pH is anywhere from 8.5 to 10. The pH of ionized water tends to keep [store] much longer than the ORP.  PH will reduce with exposure to air but not anywhere near the degree that ORP will.

Storing for 1-2 hours

In these videos, I test the ionized water before filling the bottles and then fill them with as little air bubble as possible. Then I wait for a couple hours and test again.

Before

pH

ORP

Ionized Water 10.4 -750

After

Mason Jar 10.2 -750
Glass Bottle 10.5 -715
White Plastic Bottle 10.6 -605
Fiji Bottle 10.6 -545
Evian Bottle 10.7 -590
Dasani Bottle 10.8 -480
Aquafina Bottle 10.8 -455
Little Plastic Jug 10.8 -440

As you can see, the mason jar was almost exactly the same ORP and pH as the original ionized water before it was stored! This is THE best way to store ionized water. One key thing to do is to ensure that there is no air bubble in the container.

Storing for One Day

Here are some results from further [off-video] testing I did with storing ionized water. I let some containers sit for one day with ionized water. These are some, but not all, of the containers shown in the video above.

Before

pH

ORP

All 10.5 -750

After

White Plastic Bottle 10.6 -365
Little Plastic Jug 10.8 -200
Dasani Bottle 10.7 -309
Glass Bottle 10.6 -425
Mason Jar 10.4 -690

As you can see, the mason jar wins again, by a long shot. The glass bottle is a close second.

So if you have to store your ionized water while at work or for any other reason, consider using a mason jar. This is a good way to keep the ionized water as “fresh” as possible.

Today Susan, at Alkaline Water Plus, is going to compare pH drops with the results of pH tested with a calibrated pH meter. First of all, we want to ensure that the pH drops test accurately. Then secondly, since we sell two different sizes of the pH drops we are curious if both sizes are equally accurate.

Hypothesis

It is also predicted that the pH drops will be pretty accurate in their ability to show the pH of various levels of ionized water. The smaller bottle is predicted to be slightly more accurate than the larger bottle, because the larger bottle is less popular and probably sits on the shelf longer…therefore is not as fresh.
We will see what happens.

Conclusion

So, it looks like the smaller bottle was more accurate than the larger bottle of pH reagent drops. However, the larger bottle was not too far off. I noticed while doing this test that the color chart that comes with the bigger bottle was slightly different than the color chart that comes with the smaller bottle. The color that the water turned was about the same color with both bottles of pH reagent drops. It is misleading though the slight color differences in the charts. The color chart for the smaller bottle of pH reagent drops is definitely more accurate.

Chemical makeup of pH Reagent Drops:

Ethanol- This is another name for alcohol. It is found in alcoholic beverages and is used as a fuel and also as a solvent. In this case, pH reagent drops, it is used as a solvent.

Phenolphtalein- This is a chemical compound made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. It does not dissolve in water but will dissolve in alcohols. This compound when mixed in strongly acidic solutions turns orange. When it is mixed in acid or near neutral solutions it is colorless. When mixed in basic solutions it turns pink or fuchsia. When it is mixed in strongly basic solutions it is colorless.

Methyl Red- This is an indicator dye that turns red in acidic solutions. It is red below pH 4.4, yellow in pH above 6.2, and orange between 4.4 and 6.2 pH.

Bromothymol Blue- This is another indicator for weak acids and bases. It is yellow below 6.0 pH, blue above 7.6 pH, and green between 6.0 and 7.6 pH.

Note: Do not drink this solution or get in your eyes or on your skin. This solution is combustible so keep away from heat, flames, or fire.

pH Testing Paper

As you can deduce, the mixture of these three color indicators which change with the different pH levels is what causes the pH reagent drops to have their different colors. That is what the handy color chart that comes with the pH reagent drops is for, so you don’t have to figure out what color it should be based on the color indicators used.

The pH testing paper, on the other hand, probably only uses one of the above chemical pH indicators. My best guess is that it uses bromothymol blue because it goes from yellow to shades of green to shades of blue. The reason why you wouldn’t use the pH test paper for testing your water is because it only tests from a pH of 5.5 to 8.0. So above and below those pH levels it would not be able to accurately test the water. This is great, however, for testing saliva because it’s right in the range that the saliva should be. It also allows for a more precise color chart.

pH Meter

Some people wonder if they should get a pH meter or just rely on the drops. PH meters are usually as reliable as pH reagent drops, but they are expensive and require extra work to keep them calibrated and clean. As long as the pH drops are stored in room temperature and out of direct sunlight, they should be accurate for at least 2 years.

Definitions

Reagent:

-a substance or compound that is added to a system in order to bring about a chemical reaction or is added to see if a reaction occurs-wikipedia

-a substance that, because of the reactions it causes, is used in analysis and synthesis-dictionary.com

This video is included to demonstrate how cabbage juice can be used as a pH indicator. This is a great home-experiment that anyone could do.

pH:

-This stands for potential Hydrogen. This is the ability to attract hydrogen ions. Acidic molecules have a low ability to attract hydrogen ions and alkaline has a high ability to attract hydrogen ions. But in laments terms it is the measurement of acid or alkaline. Zero is very acidic, seven is neutral, and fourteen is very alkaline. Also this system of measurement is logarithmic, meaning that a pH of 6 is 10 times more acidic than 7(neutral) and a pH of 8 is 10 times more alkaline than 7.
